light fantastic

That's a PT1 - tiny DC 9V external power supply, and the speed control switch is a black acrylic triangle knob on the plinth. A Too has a much bigger PSU, and a black button to click speed from off to 33 to 45 to off.

The smoked lid is unusual, but was an original option.

A careful scrub of the wooden plinth with an old toothbrush and soapy water, then rub in a decent furniture polish and it will look much better.

I bought an Export from Zouch a year or so back; helpful chaps.

Should be worth a punt, ask a few questions, particularly about the bearing and the Grace should be a nice starter.

Found One Too!

Postby jam05 » 07 Jul 2011 23:32

I found this one and have bought it!:

I'll have to start it with a borrrowed Linn Basik arm with Stanton 500 cartridge though. What arm and cartridge should I be aiming for? Any opinions?

That was a quick PT purchase, took me nearly thirty years to finally get mine

I think a few people will agree that a Mission 774 Original arm is a fantastic match for PT tables, make sure it is an Original not LC http://www.vinylengine.com/library/mission/774-%28original%29.shtml

As for cartridge, depends how far up the food chain you want to go and what your preference are in terms of sound. If you decide to go moving coil you may need the added expense of a phonostage if your amplifier doesn't support mc.

At present I am using an Audio Technica AT OC9 to great effect, some people think it is a little too forward but it seems to work well with my Musical Fidelity amps (I have 4 different 80's models) and Tannoy 611 speakers.

SatanFriendly wrote a really good post on several cartridges you may wish to consider if your budget allows. The absent OC9 is the one I now own and am very happy to have caught the bargain in time. SF is another PT owner and a wealth of information. http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=38482
If I find myself caught between two evils I choose the one I haven't tried yet.

One vital thing to note with the PT Too is that you must never plug the power supply into the mains without first plugging in the PT; apparently the lack of electrical load can damage the power supply.

It is well worth reading through this forum (esp. the stickies at the top) for the info you can glean!
