Hello from a chilly Cape Town

I made my usual foray to my favourite fleamarket today and bought a mint This is the Moody Blues double LP set. Lots of text on the front cover... The Moody Blues To our Children's Children, The Moody Blues A question of Balance, Blah Blah Every Good boy deserves favour etc.

Not my usual fare but any fans/comments out there??

Can't say I'm much of a fan although I do enjoy Knights in White Satin, their later work leaves me a little cold...
I bought a nice reissue, Recital By Billie Holiday, a few weeks ago, great stuff.

They promised sun here, so far wind and clouds.
I'm not impressed :evil:

Thanks for the insight. At the time of my post earlier, I had not given it a spin but have done so now. Your opinion is in exact agreement with mine. Besides the music (which is passable- but only just!) there is something dreadfully wrong with the dynamics of these two LP's. They sound lifeless and compressed with what appears to be a confused soundstage on most bands.

Regrettably, these Moody Blues will go into the 'To be disposed of' rack.

A further comment about today's trip to the flea market. I came across 3 plastic crates of what appears to be a single person's record collection. Many Mercury Living Presence, Archiv, Decca, Jecklin, Melodiya, Philips labels. As it was cool weather here today, I decided to have a look.

The covers were in fine nick but all of them had their inner sleeves removed and the condition of the vinyl AFTER they came into the hands of the flea marketer looked as if they travelled on the back of an open Pajero - Paris to Dakar.

Please put me in touch with a Marseille garotte specialist...

Yeah! i bought Bob dylans the times they are a changin' last week! Its recorded in mono and on 180g vinyl. sounds great

Haydn Concerti for Lira & Hugo Ruf, an RCA Living Stereo Prokofieff Concerto no3 etc Chicago SO & Walter Hendl, for the youngsters - Rossini, His Lfe and Music narrative & Excerpts, an lp with Rene Kollo, another RCA (Jussi Bjoerling), a Decca Jacques Loussier Trio play Bach, a Lucia Popp & Academy of St Martin in the Fields, a DG Grand Prix du Disque (Mozart), a Katleen Ferrier Ace of Clubs, EMI Elly Ameling?,Rendezvous Mit Richard Tauber EMI/Parlophono lp, P Domingo on CBS, more Bach on Decca & Jacques Loussier, more on a London, John Williams (Paganini & Haydn), my grand prize today (JS Bach Orgel meisterwerke with Helmuth Rilling on a DENON PCM label, Stuttgart Gedachtniskirche sound engineer Peter Willemoes - looking forward to this one! And the last Yaravi Musica de los Andes on Polydor. How much did I pay? Nix for taking a Quad 405 Series 11 off his hands for around 50quid UK.

I'm not too keen on Quad s/s amps as I already have 2x33/303's which are refurbished but unused.

Got the LP you recommended, as a Second Chance Offer from eBay:
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2, Pilippe Entremont, Leonard Bernstein, NY Philharmonic, on Columbia Stereo MS 6148!
The seller included two articles on this concerto, one of which tells of the van Cliburn recording of it with Chicago Symphony/ Firtz Reiner.
Will play it tonight, with DV 17D3/OL RB-250. Thanks for the recommendation!

this is not your first copy of this music? or is it?
i think you will like this recording. it is very emotional and i just love the stanza blending that Bernstein does.
he had a very sensitive and sure hand, even as a young conductor.
that your Dynavector is so capable of replaying timber, you will enjoy this one i think.

It almost is my first copy of this music...only that the real first copy came in three days ago, with Earl Wild on the piano. So, since Rachmaninoff is really new to me, I don't know which one I like better. But Enteremont/Bernstein are sure fire! That timber really sounds wonderful through the 17D3!

That's really interesting. In the early days of stereophonic records Bob Dylan albums presented Bob's voice in one speaker, his guitar in the other and his harmonica somewhere mid stage. Instead of "Freewheeling" Bob Dylan it should have been named "Dismembered" Bob Dylan. Joking apart, those old Mono recordings are still the best. I was playing an old Folkways Label album a few days ago

Hello, everyone!
We all know that charity stores are full of records (that's where I usually buy mine...) but have you noticed how often the ones you like are scratched and the ones you don't care about are in perfect shape?
Today I bought a 3 records box set of Andrea Chenier By Giordano (Angel Records S 3545CL with Franco Corelli, Antonietta Stella and Mario Sereni).
I only paid $3.00 but I still was very disappointed when, at home, I looked at them and they were in a pitiful condition...
What a shame...
Better luck next time, there are lots of opportunities for records here in Toronto!

Hi Mauro

What a pity about that Angel box. This label was usually a cheaper version to the original from EMI. Often also, the conditions for inspecting vinyl at the place of purchase is far from ideal so one would really have to be quite firm in disciplining yourself when picking through piles of used records. I've fallen into the same trap many times before but later on, lessons learnt not to let your heart rule your reasoning, one can walk away easier from a potentially disastrous purchase.
