Mix Tape Swapping.

Postby aphoticism » 17 Mar 2011 07:32

I also posted this in the music and records section.

I haven't posted on here in quite some time but I have been really busy with other projects.

Anyways, I have friends all over the world and I always love to know what they're listening too and/or what they've found at local record stores. A few close friends of mine have been making mixed tapes with all types of music to send back and forth to get each other into new things.

Now I know we live in an age of click and play internet databases but there is something special with sending out tapes in the mail and getting a new one with assorted pieces from friends and enthusiasts.
However, what I propose is to make a mixed tape for someone on this forum with a variety of some what related musical pieces based on their desired taste.

Any input?

I'm 100% serious. I have been making tapes for friends and I figured it would be rad to get more people involved.

I love mixed tapes and getting awesome packages in the mail.

Probably doing this on CD-R is the most practical today. Good audio cassettes have gotten hard to find, and R-T-R is so darned expensive. I could do this on (GASP!) Hi-Fi VHS or ED-Beta, but not everyone could. From me you'd get everything from Eddie Cantor to Roger Waters, and Hank Williams Sr. to Highway 101, and stranger, but I'd play. Use the plastic CD mailers and it costs about $1.50 to "Media Mail" them anywhere in the US, and just a little more to Canada. The number of "good" MP-3 files, I can count on my fingers and toes.

I know, I know...

It's more about the experience of networking and good relationships. I am more than willing to send a tape out first, and await some sort of mixture in return.

I am into obscure findings that you might have on record. Especially if you heard something and you really enjoyed the subject of it. Just to bundle them up in or own order in a mixture of what you think will work. You know, it would be interesting to get a jumble of their works assorted with your taste. I have some rock with a bit of traditional flair that I could make a fun mixed tape with if that's what you're into. Maybe some jazz fusion, a bit of heavy rock with some good rhythms?

I would record to a cassette tape because I love the process, also because most are on record not digital. I would love a CD-R in the mail with a mixture of artists and their works that you think would be interesting if that's what you would prefer.

What do you think?

And yes, shipping is relatively cheap for Media Mail in the states. I mail out LP's at usually $3.50 with delivery confirmation. So I would imagine a cassette tape would be less expensive.[/b]

Where in NY are you?

Although I just picked up another Tascam 112, I am not really interested in going cassette... I just needed a working play deck with balanced out. I have some boot legs I need to digitize, as well as cassettes from others. I can also do vinyl and open reel tape if that need arises.

I will be archiving onto CD24 format. Can you play that? If not, I can do standard red book CD as well. (most computers can figure it out)

My music is fairly broad, but I am always looking to broaden it further!

Anyway, I'm in Huntington/Westbury area...

Jim, I'm in Huntington myself. I used to go over to Just Kids Nostalgia, but sadly they closed their doors as a Vinyl source. I will drive out to Smithtown and go to Mr Cheapo's but not too often. Do you have any spots on the Island you enjoy?

I only us CD's by uploading them to my ITunes, so as long as they are able to be uploaded through there I would be interested. I use my IPod though my amplifier by auxiliary cable. But I am referring to making your own mix of artists and genres for a nice playable experience.

Sounds good, let me know what you're thinking.

Cool. I have had good luck at the Salvation Army at the end of Elwood road (on 25). All Vinyl is $1.00 each!

I will do redbook mixes, so you can load them into iTunes.

Have you heard Black Country Communion yet?

I am not familiar with their work. Where did you get into them?
