Hi, ordered stylus before I got your link, and it doesn't fit, this is what I bought http://www.stylusplus.co.uk/goodmans-gs ... 7836-p.asp

looks as if it should fit but the problem seems to be with the grooves inside where it slides on, have sent pics to seller, did I just get the wrong one do you think? By the way, got to work with a spirit level and skipping now stopped, hurrah! not tested on best records due to stylus but certainly a huge improvement. So wish I'd taken "Bottom Entry" as user name now. Thanks again.

Hello Wendy.
although you may be strangely attracted to a Dual 505 i would suggest that ,at least in my opinion, the pro-ject debut may be infact a better
choice for a start up deck.Duals 505 seem to be be very plastic and
the headshell fitting a source of problems.I have already owned
4 and it's the only turntable I have ever had to completely throw in
a skip.I have a large amount of decks now as I collect just about anything that spins but whenever I even hear a 505 mentioned my heart sinks.I do agree that when they do work the sound they produce
is of a reasonable quality but in my experience it's far from a sturdy
machine and when things do go wrong, like the pitch belt, you may not be able to get replacements.Other members may have a different opinion of course,Good luck and enjoy whatever you decide to purchase.
Regards,
Victor.

Well everyone, visited parents at the weekend. My Dad was so mortified that my equipment was being described as low bottom entry that he felt compelled to send me home with his his Denon PMA 520 amplifier in order to preserve the family honour. Certainly working well until we packed it up, very well looked after with reciept, manual, everything. Also, have procured Dual CS505 2 on ebay so will no doubt be back in a few days time on advice for setting it all up, hurrah!
Still not got new stylus for the other one, never mind, slowly slowly catchee monkey :D

You're welcome

You're going to like the dual I think. What cartridge does it come with?

Hi, not ignoring you, not sure, will have to wait and see when it arrives, quite excited, you can be sure that I'll be back with loads of questions as soon as I unpack it  Do you think I should start a new thread at that point. I'm guessing that the goodmans will be forgotten fairly swiftly once the dual and denon are working ok ( always the optimist.) I have however sent the original stylus off to the company you first suggested so that they can match it up. Back soon X

Sure, a new thread seems like a good idea to bring in your 'Dual Era'

The Denon amp your Dad gave you looks like a nice bit of kit, should match up nicely with the Dual turntable. So now... speakers! Which ones will you be using?

Hi, well took the plunge today and set up new amp. I have to say that even playing my least precious records with the goodmans turntable complete with dodgy stylus it sounds pretty magnificent to me already. What improvement I'm going to hear with dual I await with eager anticipation. Dual not here yet but thought I would just get a bit familiar with the amp and get speakers on etc. Re. Speakers. Just put on the afore mentioned JVC SP D602 ( can't believe I'm starting to talk like this!)
Labyrinth,, says at the back, 80 watts. 6 ohms. Not 100% sure if they're not for home cinema really. No complaints at the moment. I also have a pair of small Acoustic Solutions bookshelf speakers AV20 mk2 that I seem to remember sounded nice and clear before I decided wattage wasn't enough for amp but fine if you don't go too loud. Says on back, Long term,50watts, short term 50 watts. Dad has offered me his old mission 700 speakers but the base cone is knackered on one of them, seem ok otherwise but I don't know whether it would be worth trying to get them repaired, possibly not. Dad was going to buy me a new project debut if I hadn't won the dual auction, don't know what's come over him. As he didn't, if turntable is ok he may wish to make a donation to speakers perhaps  Otherwise I'm sure you can give me a few ideas of what to be looking out for 2nd hand when the time is right, not an emergency. Downloaded dual 505.2 instructions, thank you vinyl engine :D Scared the bejeebers out of me but I'm sure it will all seem straightfoward in the flesh. Will start new thread when it arrives , sure you're waiting with baited breath! Enjoy your weekend :D

I see the bug is starting to bite 8)

Great news about the amp Wendy, it looks to be a nice one. The JVC speakers will most definitely stand a major upgrade. But as you say, get your Dual plugged in and working and then there's plenty of time to talk speakers, which if I dare say it on this forum, is probably a more contentious subject than turntables!

Weekend good so far, off to spin some cd's and finish off a bottle of Laphroaig. Look forward to the next chapter!

About speakers and amps: I find most of my listening is at about 1 watt. 10 watts is loud, and 50 watts scares the neighbours.
It is good to have over-capacity, though. A 50-watt amp will sound much better at 1 watt than a 10-watt amp. all other things being equal.

Cheers,
Alec

Yeah, new amp puts me in mind of "Spinal Tap" , "Yes, but this goes up to 11". Denon goes up to 30,daren't even go there, I'm listening just cracked on really, 10 scares me! Thanks for input, sure we'll find some appropriate speakers in due course. Still pacing up and down waiting for dual.
