Rob. Was that the one in the gatefold sleeve?

I know I bought some 7" singles with pocket money from 68 onwards but the earliest one I kept was a freebie flexi from Slade with "Mama we're all crazee now"

My first 45 single:

"I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent" with Frankie Lymon. :D

Sorry for not replying sooner! No it was, iirc, a glossy finish thin card sleeve. But it was a looooong time ago & the single has long since disappeared from my collection :( so it could have even been a paper sleeve. It was deffo not the gatefold sleeve though.

I was looking through some of my stuff that's still at my mums house (20 years after I moved out... :P ) the other day and found a few flexis, mostly mid-late 80's indie stuff off the front of fanzines. Also a good few Sarah Records singles and other stuff from my youth.... Shall sneak them into the house soon when Mrs Rob's not looking

I was with some friends in the cafe and out of the jukebox came BE BOP A LULA by the great Gene Vincent. What a amazing record and I just had to have it ( still have it today)
Yes I know this will date me but to have lived through the birth of rock n roll was a life changing experience.

^ memories! 8)

Teddy Boys, punch-ups, hanging round Cafes, a shilling in the Juke Box, girls wearing suspenders and stockings, the Dodgems, the travelling Fair, Beatles playing The Cavern and the local Cinema, motorbikes, Mod and Rocker fights at Margate, scooter boys in Parkas, Mod suits, Carnaby Street, the Who at the Railway Hotel, Rockers at the Busy Bee, the Chicken Run at the Ace Cafe, Ford Zodiacs and Vauxhall Crestas, Flower Power and Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix playing the Marquee....

...I blooming missed it all, i was at school until 1969, but entered the "world" in the Skinhead era - witnessed the growing Football aggro at Stamford Bridge and on the streets as a biker, literally got "kicked" out of Ruislip Lido by hundreds of Skinheads , then went Hippy and frequented dingy smoky Pub cellars checking out the underground Prog Rockers, something which has stayed but still appreciate the cultures of the previous years, I eventually got to see many of my old heroes including the Who and Led Zeppelin, was a typical 70's Chart follower, a few Festivals....those were the days, if you asked me today what is the No.1 single i wouldn't have a clue.... but i still have "Be Bop a Lula"

I'm a young'un and a little late to 7" 45s. The first one I bought new was of Montreal's "Id Engager" b/w "Alter Eagle" on gold (more like process yellow) vinyl as an extra thing in a mail-order package.

The first old-school 45s I bought were at the same time: the Star Wars theme b/w "Cantina Band" (or maybe the other way around); Steely Dan's "FM (No Static at All)"; and Focus's "Hocus Pocus."

The first 7" disc I ever purchased was the "A Something's Extra" bonus disc that came with a $1 copy of Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life.

The first 45-rpm vinyl I bought was an old filmi soundtrack I got at a Goodwill on 12". I didn't realize it was a 45 until the second side. I thought it was quite strange that the lead voices were a baritone and a tenor… :?

Your first single

The 78 version of "Rock around the clock", by Bill Haley, flip side being "Pin ball boogie" by a bloke the name of whom I can't remember anymore.
Unfortunately, those records being extremely breakable, it happened what had to happen...
Found another copy since on 7" single with "See you later alligator" on the flipside on Brunswick label.
Great memories!

the 1st single I bought myself was "another brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd.

There's a story to it: I was 13, I saved every penny from my pocket money to be able to buy the The Wall album. When I finally had the DFl 27.50 together, I proudly told my dad that I was going to the record store to buy the record. He didn't allow me to spend all my savings on one album :x so I bought the single instead

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was Diana Ross and The Supremes "Love Child". I still have it. It still actually plays pretty well, considering the way we took care of records back then (we didn't).

Some great first singles here...

Mine was rubbish, "When I need you" by Leo Sayer when I was 7 or 8 I guess....that put me off music for a few years....

I'm a little prouder of my next one...."Gangsters" by the Specials, followed by pretty much all of the early two tone records....

Unfortunately they got destroyed in a house move a few years later and somehow I never got around to getting new copies, hmmmm, those are on my list now....

The Kinks - 'All Day & All Of The Night'

Still love it when Ray yells 'get 'em off' before Dave has an epileptic fit on guitar :D
