Model 1245: Won't auto start/drop, won't return at end recor

Postby mstuartev » 31 Dec 2010 20:17

I did some searches but thought I might ask here again to see if this is a fixable (my myself) thing. (I do have Steve at Paragon Audio/Video here in Madison to fall back on if needed - he did the tune up about 10+ years ago))

I finally got my Dual 1245 back from my Ex-wife (it replaces a serviceable Pioneer PL-12D TT). She informed me that it plays fine but tonearm doesn't return to off position at end of play cycle. (arggh) Actually it won't move and drop in the first groove at start (can be manually started). It all worked fine before (arrgh).

At end it lifts, hesitates, then will drop again - sometimes in the last couple grooves, then lifts again... etc

Is this a common issue and perhaps easily fixed by myself or better to get service? I can get the table off the base and have found some similar Manuals (the 1245 free online is German).

Acht! I just came across the Steuerpimpel thing... that may be it. Now it's a matter of finding where it was and fashioning one? Looking in the bottom of the base yields no pimpel.

I'm going out on a limb here, and I'm gonna say pimpel. Type that in the searchbox...I'm too drunk to be able to spell it fully, lol.

Cheers,

JIE:
Well you Canadians are getting a head start on the New Year? (har har). With the Tea Party-esque Governor coming into power here in Wisconsin, killing off a rejuvenated rail project and a hundred other social programs, 2011 doesn't look to be a good year but... ACHT! I digress.

Well the forum came through big time. I flipped the table, and found a pin (the pimpel pin?) that had some residue on it and no plastic thingy. I quick fashioned a steuerpimpel with some audio cable, wire stripped out, snipped to about 4MM, and jammed on the pin with some tape beneath to make it tight. Tested it and BINGO! the tone arm did what it was trained to do! I will figure out a way to do a more permanent solution (I have some acrylic gel that I use for my art that will STICK that puppy tight on the pin.

To honor your assistance, we are playing Joni Mitchell For the Roses (my wife's favorite "Cooking Split Pea Soup" music.)

And we'll tip a few Belgian Ales later

I was being slightly facetious. I'm drinking, not drunk, but I don't know German — only Mandarin and English — so I don't have the name of the particular part memorized.

Just wait for Alec or lini to reply; they're pretty much the experts around here.

Who's Joni Mitchell? I'm a young cat who listens to hip-hop. That said, I inherited endless 45s and 33s of the Beatles, Johnny Cash, and so forth from my parents.

Belgian ales? Stella Artois?

Right now, I'm drinking Crown Royal. It's far superior to, say, Jack Daniels.

Also, Canada will beat the USA in the World Juniors in Buffalo this year -- just like we did in the Olympics. That said, if you're from WI, you're probably more interested in Clay Mathews performance.

A young guy drinking Crown Royal? Guess there is hope for the younger generation. We prefer the odd Abbey Ales (Maredsous, Pawel Kwak, Monks Cafe... chewy stuff!) I just don't drink much that is higher octane except the occasional summer margarita, shot of 5 year old Tequila or Grand Marnier.

I was a kid of the mid 60's to mid 70's so have that sorta vintage vinyl bit. Curious.. my daughter (24 years) has gifted me with 6 piece of NEW vinyl last xmas and this - Alan Lomax re-issues of southern folk/Blues, John Coltrane's "Love Supreme reissue," Robert Johnson vinyl reissue (the original cover art/notes) and some stuff from Mississippi Records out of Portland. The younger generation is A-OK. I need to go out and actually buy a NEW, recently pressed vinyl by someone NEW. These reissues are great... but they sound like OLD records. I played a vinyl piece she owned, new release... ahh... the fidelity.

Okay... yeah, I saw USA v. Germany on a pub TV screen last night. They were ripping it up. Clay Matthews? Well, he'll have to get by my beloved Bears to get into the playoffs - tho da Bears might just rest on the #2 seed and play the 2nd string.
There there are the UW Badgers n the Rose BOwl. Always a spectacle!

Enjoy and Feliz Ano Nuevo

Sorry for chiming in late, guys, but I just returned from my parents' place: the usual filet in oil fondue on NY'sEve - and then Feuerzangenbowle! A must... ;)

Anyway, yup the Steuerpimpel. That's not really an official German word, but rather a special Dual word creation, btw. Probably the best translation would be "control pimple" or "control wart". I think I'd use the latter due to sounding even sillier... "What's the problem, honey?" "Darn, i lost my control wart..." "Your WHAT?!?" :D

Grinnings from Munich & a happy 2011 to you!

one last piece of advice

Postby mstuartev » 01 Jan 2011 16:11

Thanks for all the help and humor. Good health to all this year.
One last bit of advice. Have any of you that had to "fashion" a new control wart had more luck with one kind of material over another? I reckon I"ll head to the hardware store and just rummage around in their nuts and bolt section from something cylindrical and plastic like.

Or just ask Paragon Audio if they happen to have one.

I used a bit of the plastic ink tube from a cheap ballpoint pen.
You need 1 mm beyond the end of the pin.

Cheers,
Alec

Mark: Apparently there are quite a few diy replacements that work (not speaking out of personal experience here, though - my own two Duals are pretty young, and only one of 'em has got a Pimpel anyway...) - besides the biro mine Alec already mentioned, pieces of cable isolation also seem to work just fine, and iirc some also solved the problem with heat shrink tube.

However, the original part also is still available - I think All-in-one Electronics/forthegroove.com sell it for ca. 6 bucks.

Greetings from Munich!

Hi - Just joined the forum, my Dual 1245 has this problem. Can anyone give a more detailed explanation of the solution, i.e. where to find the "pimpel" and how to replace it? Thanks!
