Knosti disco antistat - lowish quality but top results

I've seen mixed reviews of these things (including here at VE). I took the plunge and bought one last week. I paid £30UK (& £5 p+p) from Amazon. I have to say that until now, I've been skeptical about wet cleaning and subscribed to the Rega theory that cleaning is generally overdone. I always use a carbon brush before playing though.

My initial impression is that it's rather cheap and nasty in terms of manufacturing quality. For a start, the plastic caps need removing from the drying rack as their undersides are rather sharp and could damage records. If the clamp was just 2mm wider in diameter it would be better but as it is, it allows fluid to leak onto the label in most cases.

Having got that out of the way though, the results I've had so far on 75 LPs have been good to downright spectacular. A number of records I've dismissed as near unplayable came up shining. Where once there were clicks, pops, and crackles there is now clarity and detail. In many cases, the gaps between tracks came out silent too. I'm very pleased indeed. :D

You have to be patient with the Knosti of course. I give it at least an hour for records to dry before packing them into new inner sleeves. A few records seem to have a tidemark left behind where the fluid runs off and one or two had a mysterious silver trail in the run-out groove. Neither was audible though.

If like me, you've got a lot of secondhand records I'd recommend one without hesitation. If you're particularly fussy, you might like to get two and use the other bath for rinsing. You'll also have the advantage of being able to clean 30 LPs per session. The fluid has already gone pale brown and I'm intending to experiment with a brew of lukewarm water, a drop or two of Fairy and a couple of caps of white vinegar.

I'd be interested to hear of anyone else's experience and comments.

I purchased a Knosti in September and have been similarly delighted. I have cleaned more than 300 albums, old, new and a large number of boot-sale purchases......... some of which my daughter purchased for me and these were very dirty.

I have never used the fluid that came with the Knosti. Having read the negative comments with respect to the residue it seems to leave behind; I purchase distilled water and isopropyl alcohol (£7 for 5 litres) and make my own cleaning solution. I only use the solution (and subsequent pure water rinse) once, usually for a batch of 8 vinyls, and then I throw it.

I find that drying with a microfibre cloth after both the wash and then the rinse there is never any problem with residue or smears of any kind. I usually leave the vinyls in the rack to thoroughly dry overnight before repacking in new sleeves.

As for the labels; they sometimes do become wet around the edged but I usually give them a quick wipe to dry as soon as I remove the clamp and there has never been a problem with marking or discolouration.

I would highly recommend the Knosti, particularly for cleaning really grimy second-hand purchases.

I'm a fan of the Knosti, as is now well documented here on VE. I would question your removal of the rack "caps", however. I hope you've kept them safe so that you can replace them if you change your mind.

I am a big fan of Knosti also and have said this elsewhere.

But if you get a piece of vinyl that is an absolute collectors item and worth a lot then I would not use the Knosti as it does wet the label and can leave a wet mark.

As I keep all the records I buy this isn't a problem for me.

I use mine as described by everyone else, but when the discs are almost dry, I transfer them onto my KAB EV1 which connects to my domestic vacuum cleaner, and do the final drying on that.
The EV1 is an amazing bit of kit, $149 US well spent.
They ship to the UK too.
http://www.kabusa.com , then click on record cleaners.
You don't need the Knosti , works as a stand alone cleaner too.

I wait until i've a batch of 20 or so to do.

I inspected my stylus last night after playing a load of the records I'd cleaned on the Knosti. I have to say that it was really grubby. Thankfully, it's just an AT95e and was easily cleaned.

I've also tried a batch of the water / Fairy / clear vinegar solution and this seems to work fine too.

Phil, several earlier posts have complained about residue left on the vinyls from the knosti fluid, which ends up gumming the stylus. Even after a couple of rinses it still seems to be a problem.

That was the reason I decided to ditch the fluid which came with the machine and mix my own as detailed above.

When you are a long time user of the Knosti (with original fluid), get one of your first cleaned albums out and try to get some music out of it now....
There might be a chance that it is one big dried out field of debris.
It will sound as if your needle was broken.....

This was my problem as well, when I used the Knosti...
I have used the Knosti in the mid 90's, at some time I used pre wash and after wash, by two separate bottles of the supplied fluid.
But that stuff kept on growing at my needle with every play, and I could not get rid of it.

Now when it's done with one play, then you might want to think, okay, I have to play my LP once to get it real clean, but unfortunately that was not the case.

I stopped using the Knosti when I realized that I stored albums back without playing it once after the Knosti cleaning.
Those albums I now try to clean on a RCM with some effect, but those albums that were cleaned on the Knosti all those years back, are now not playable without a deep cleaning.....

Not all negative, because I also have used the Knosti on albums that where really dirty, and they became quiet "clean" to a certain point.....

I still have it, and I was already playing with the idea of using it for a rough pre-wash before I use the RCM on really dirty records (2nd hand?)
You have the perfect ability to really "scrub" your record between those two brushes...

Marco, did you ever try using the Knosti with an alternative fluid, for example isoprop/water ?

It seems to me that the cleaning mechanism of moving the vinyl through the brushes in the trough of fluid is a good one, provided there is no residue on the discs. I believe the the Knosti fluid contains a substance which is supposed to eliminate static and it is this which gums up the stylus.

I've never had a problem with vinyls cleaned in suitable fluid and then well rinsed and dried.

I have used a Knosti for several years with amazing results, but the fluid they supply leaves a sticky residue on the records. Recommmend washing again with clear water or like me use a 1/3 99% Isopropyl Alch. and 2/3 distilled water mix to get pristine results. 8)

I manage to clean my 45's with the above mixture sprayed on and a wipe round with a micro-fibre cloth.

Right-On Fred !

I've only had mine a few months but have cleaned over 300 vinyls with it and the results have been remarkable..........

I'm inclined to say that you're right. Just played another 4 sides of Knosti fluid cleaned LPs and they all left muck behind on the stylus. However, this was dry muck and easily removed with a stylus brush. I've earmarked these records for a second clean in my own solution.

There's also the advantage that we cheapo MM owners have of being able to change stylus easily. I keep a "top" one for new records and a second for the old duffers.

No I did not used anything else than the provided fluid....
And now with me using the RCM, I don't have a real motivation anymore to try...
But getting an LP wet, with whatever fluid and then simply let it dry will always leave something behind....

I'm not sure what you mean by provided there's no residue on the disc.
Isn't that what it is made for?
Are you saying that residue may damage your record when scrubbing it between the brushes?

No Marco............ by residue I mean material left on the disc after it has been dried.

I am led to believe that the muck left behind by the Knosti fluid is anti static material added to the cleaning solution by Knosti. So I wouldn't use it.

The IPA/Distilled water cleaning solution shouldn't leave anything behind after it evaporates, provided there is no residual dirt suspended in the solution.

So......... provided the vinyl is washed,( between the brushes in the trough), and then adequately rinsed and ,preferably, dried to remove any liquid before it evaporates......... (using a cloth, or a vacuum if you are luck enough to have one handy) there should be no residue on your lovely spangly vinyls :D
