Platter Mat?

Postby hoolio » 03 Dec 2010 01:25

Before I get to the subject I will point out there has been no post on this forum for 13 days. Keep this up and the Linn forum might be replaced for another such as a Michell forum, Heaven forbid!! :)

Now, I'm tired of my felt mat. It's a dust trap and I use a lint roller occasionaly on it and find cat fur on it! The damn mongrel goes nowhere my Linn and I use a lid. Also there are static electrical problems.

The Origin Live upgrade platter mat has got my attention and they recommend it for the Linn.

Opinions, experiences or recommendations?

Thanks

Julian

I'm using a Heybrook, not a Linn, but a DIY leather mat after a felt mat sounds excellent. Cheap, too.

Thanks Alec,
How thick is the leather? I presume you use the smoother side.

1 - 2 mm is good. I use soft leather, not the hard kind.
Trace a record, including the hole, and cut out.
Put the mat on a 'table, and use a felt pen to trace a perfectly centered outer edge as it spins.
I've tried both sides, and have not been struck by much difference. But once you try it, you'll never go back to felt.

Cheers,
Alec

The Funk Firm Acromat and the Sound Dead Steel Isoplatmat are both excellent for the Linn.

Take a look at Ringmat. I tried an aftermarket felt mat, a sorbethane mat, and a rubber mat. They all sucked the life right out of the LP12. I liked the stock felt best...until I tried a Ringmat. I don't know what is involved that makes them cost near $100 USD, but they are magic. I thought it tightened the bass and gave the music more....music!

I like it so much I am very tempred to drop another $100 and try the new improved Ringmat!

tim61, do you think you could drop a couple of bucks on a piece of leather, and post your comparison to a Ringmat?

Cheers,
Alec

Hi,

I've got an acrylic one on my SF-modified Linn Axis. This one:

I had a cork one before, but the acrylic one gives a better balance, imho. I can only recommend it.

I would be willing to give that a try. How thick is the leather you are using?

I own more than a dozen of turntable mats, including felt, acrylic, glass, rubber and Dumpa mat etc. I don't think the Ringmat is as good as the Acromat and Isoplatmat, in my system, it sucks.

Try 1 - 2 mm. soft leather. A square foot should only be a few bucks.

Alec, a Linnie mate of mine made up some leather mats - which are streets ahead, soundwise, of the previous mat he'd experimented with (some sort of dense foam which he can no longer get). Which back then was ahead of the Linn felt mat.

He played around with several types and the best one turned out to be a tad over 1.5mm thick, with the smooth side (outer skin) against the platter and the "suede" side up. But he used up quite a few skins before he found the optimum!! :-)) (He's obsessive! )

I'd post a pic but I have no idea how to!
