This is going to be a gyro like you newer seen before

What would happen if I dropped an Orbe platter on my hot-rod?

BTW, don't add the damping to the subchassis. It works on Orbes,
but IMO not on Gyros.

There is no need for the decoupled towers if you use
a Pedersen suspension.

Glider is nice, but very vulnerable, especially on open turntables
such as the Gyro SE, WB Circle, and SME 10. I find Lyras much
better protected.

But please do post a string of pictures here once you're done.

Yes you have a similar approach , but then again , wait and see :D
wery cool looking table BTW
What kind of motor mounting do you use werner ? looks like its attached to the sub chassis ,instead of the plinth or free standing , any advantage to this aproach ?[/img]

It is a Maxon Re-Max DC motor. It is screwed to a custom top plate (made via Schaeffer's Front Panel Designer web-CAD). This plate sits with a thin layer of blutack on top of a Rega armboard, its hole drilled larger by John Michell himself. This then sits on the subchassis with a Pedersen arm mount (well, part of it).

The advantage of such a mount is that there can never be aany relative motion between motor and suspended subchassis. The disadvantage is that it requires a very quiet motor.

Hi emokid,

I have a gyrodec Mk1 w/ an Odyssey RP1-XG Mk2 and I was the 1st ownerI I had it since medical school and it was given to me as a present by my Father.I dont have plans of selling it because of its sentimental value. But it seems when I got myself my 2nd turntable (VPI HW 19 MK4 w/ a Kuzma Stogi Ref tonearm) I realized that the performance was already below par compared to my VPI. So what I did was to order the Foll. upgrades:

1.orbe platter together w/ the orbe clamp upgrade

2.inverted bearing

3.the newer springs

4.the spring turret

5.The stand alone motor mount

6.Denso Damp

I retained the Papst AC motor, Gyropower supply , gorgeous acrylic plinth & cover and all this upgrade made a big difference and its sonically better than when it was still a Gyro MK1 and my HW 19 MK4.I upgraded my VPI HW19 MK4 to a VPI TNT MK 2.5 w/ PLC2 (using my Kuzma Stogi Ref from the MK4)and still my Gyro w/Orbe upgrade performs at par or better than the TNT. Two weeks ago I was able to trade my TNT 2.5 + cash to a TNT 6 + SDS.I mounted the Kuzma + the Koetsu Rosewood Signature from my Gyro/Orbe and it sounds fantastic its in another league compared to my Gyro/Orbe + Odyssey. The most important sonic advantage was how quiet the VPI TNT6 compared to the Gyro/Orbe.
Since Im still using the Papst Ac Motor is it possible for me to use The SDS w/ my Gyro/Orbe or if this is not possible am I forced to get the DC motor and the DC power supply upgrade from michell ? Maybe Werner can chime in.

thanks in advance,

How old is my Girodec

Postby PopeyeMills » 11 Dec 2010 14:18

3 weeks ago I went looking in the loft (unsuccessfully) for my V15-IV and instead brought down my Girodec which has lived there for at least 25 years and looked like it could do with a good clean.
I've been doing that ever since, but while browsing the forum today came across emokid's post and the responses he received about what is an early Girodec.
I knew mine was old, it has flat black feet (which are concave on the inside), and I was intrigued when emokid suggested there was a serial number under the chassis, which I wasn't aware of.
Of to the garage, and a minor disassembly later - no number, zip, nothing anywhere, not upside down, sideways, backwards. Am I missing something?
This very week I have ordered some giro-feet from Michell with the intention of fitting its first 'upgrade' but now I'm starting to think like emokid. If this is an early Girodec I don't want to do that.

Can anyone advise ? How exactly do you spot an early Girodec?

If it helps the motor assembly is the round one to the left of the turntable with the double pulley spindle and allows me to change from 33 to 45 by just moving the belt. Its powered by a black power adapter which leads to a small 3-pin plug that goes into the base of the motor.
The platter is aluminium with a rubber type mat.
The only other different thing about is that Michell made a plynth for me so that I could mount the squirrell hair dust bug.

I've had it from new but I doubt if I could even guess the right year now.

i guess Werner is going to correct me on this if im wrong but : :D

flat feet means 1984 or earlier i think , the same with the all alu platter , have a look at the bearing under the spindle , is this made from aluminim or steel ? alu is the earlier one .

the serial number is engraved in the steel chassies underneath , close to the tone arm mount , its only written with an engraving pen and not stamped or anything like that (at least not on mine ) and not so easy to spot
