Oil for RD11

Anyone have sugestions about oil for the bearing on a RD11. I've been using 3 in 1 but I've a feeling that there is better stuff out there.

Or see if you can get hold of a small bottle of Linn Black Oil which is often sold on eBay.

I've tried literally all of the above and they all work excellently. I'm currently using the SRM Tech oil in my RD11 and the Redline oil in my Heybrook TT2.

As far as I know 3 in 1 oil is meant to be corrosive so I'd change it pretty sharpish if thats true. I got that info from this forum soem time ago.

Many thanks for the list URLs for oils. I'll replace the 3 in 1 pdq - last thing I need is a trashed bearing!

One of the leading high end dealers in the Los Angeles area, and a specialist in analog (Brooks Berdan) uses synthetic 5/30 motor oil.

I was a little surprised when they told me this, but they said that they verified their info with several turntable manufacturers.

Since they are potentially loosing sales by not stocking and selling oils supplied by TT manufacturers, their recommendation has some credibility.

Hi Steve, I appreciate the Linn oil offer. I've been using Exact Audio XTTO oil (one of the ones suggested by bubba45) as this seems to be doing the trick I'll stick with it meantime. Thanks though

simoon raises a fairly good point about oil - the turntable bearing has a pretty easy life compared to most bearings so you would think that a good quality synthetic automotive oil would do the job.

I agree with the syn oil suggestion partly because petroleum oils notoriously attack plastics and rubber. As far as I know the Aristons have ptfe (teflon) parts which could be at risk with petroleum. I've seen 0W15 multigrade synthetic motor oil which is still more viscous than 3in1. Synthetic clock or watch oil might be ideal, but since we're talking about a single drop of oil here it's probably not that critical. .....TIM

Years a go when the LP12 was still very young and the motor was mounted on a cork gasket I was in discussion with a certain Mr T who advised the use of "good sewing machine oil" in the main bearing of the Linn and as the early LP12's and Rd11's were very similar that may be the oil to use?

How do you oil the bearings on the turntable? I never have!

Lift the inner platter and the spindle will come out of the sleeve. Clean out the old oil, and wipe it off the spindle. Add about 10 drops of fresh oil, and replace inner platter.
Clean the entire belt path with alcohol.

Quite sure I might get told off here but,

My RD 11 platter just wasnt spinning as much as it should do, I read a post where someone said theirs was free spinning 40 times mine was managing 6, I considered replacing the whole lot for Linn Parts but decided against it
A: because Im quite proud of the fact that its an Ariston not a linn
B: Just too expensive

So What I did was cleaned out the whole arrangement with Alcohol, cotton buds and kitchen towel, swapped the ball for a new one from my local bike shop

Oil well I opted for fully synthetic Transmission fluid ( That used in BMW and Mercedes 7G Transmissions) because I had some in the garage and figured that if it was good enough for an ultra sensitive modern Auto gearbox It ought to be ok for my very basic RD 11 bearing,

Anyhow my platter now spins 47 times, Comes up to speed much quicker and I think sounds better too, although Im only one side in as I type so its early days.

I used Fully Synthetic Skateboard bearing oil in mine. The oil is designed for abe7 grade bearings, and cost a couple of quid for twice as big a bottle as any that you buy for turntable use.
