I should've researched this ahead of the time*, but then you don't ever imagine things to be this bad do you?

I just got the euro import of Rated X by Queens of the Stone Age (aka Rated R) - and I've never heard a record sound so bad. It's pretty weighty vinyl, but it's the dullest, flattest piece of vinyl i've ever heard. And it's not my system or anything, though I wish my gear included a graphic equaliser for this record that's for sure.

Consider this a warning, no matter how much you might like this album, don't buy the vinyl.

*I've since found a thread on this subject on SteveHoffman.tv - where someone equates it to cassette quality. I think it's giving cassettes a bad name.

I was just looking two weeks ago at getting a copy for a buddy of mine who's new to vinyl. He is secretly in love with Joshua Homme. Instead I bought something equally bad for myself. I just posted about it; (The Rapture~France Pressing) It was going to be a birthday present to go along with a Black Keys album but I decided against it. Sorry to here about that. Did you buy it locally? You could take it back. I'm guessing that isn't the case thou.

If your friend is new to vinyl, I urge and beg you not to get this for them. It'll swear them off for life.

I'm sure I could take it back (i bought it from my local record store) but it's not their fault, and I'm sure they'd lose out by me doing so. I'm going to chalk this one up to experience.

Thanks for the warning - I would definitely have bought this if I'd seen it. We bought Josh Homme's 'Them Crooked Vultures' album and it sounds great.

"Well blow me down!" as my old hero Popeye used to say, when i saw this thread while waiting for the washing machine to finish its cycle - surely they cannot mean my 2000 Interscope Records/Polydor vinyl copy of QOTSA "RATED R (X Rated) " LP.....can they? I always thought this was a gem, one of the good sounding albums in my arsenal.

Just to make sure, i have said album on my faithful Linn as i write - some difficult passages there being handled very well without a trace of (unintentional) distortion, lovely tight bass, good imaging, nice splashy hihat, pounding drums, searing guitars, clear sound, involving, no surface noise at all....cassette quality? i hated cassettes, and threw them to the four winds at the earliest opportunity, their muddy hissy efforts a long forgotten 70's memory along with my Austin Allegro

Honestly, they can't be talking about my copy....? beware of cheap imitations is all i can say, my X RATED is not the best sounding album i have heard but still rates higher than many, and never dull.

what's so bad about yours...?

by the way Admin - "Golden Records vinyl to cd converter - protect your rare vinyl records by converting to cd or mp3"....SACRILEGE!! the very thought, it's mp3 that needs protecting ...from being squashed under my boot....shame on you allowing these digital upstarts on our site!

Rated R is getting a proper reissue in the US next month. 2LP, 180 Gram, etc. The EU version is likely a boot.

do you have a source for the reissue? i've seen that a cd is getting the deluxe treatment, but haven't seen any mention of vinyl.

as for the boot - not sure. i mean it's available from the usual outlets not normally associated with boots - but you never know.

I own a record store and we're supposed to have it in August. There was a legit EU release a couple years back, but apparently that is long gone and the only copies floating around are boots.

i just ordered a 2005 eu print of this from jellysounds....now i've read this i'm getting a bit antsy, new to vinyl and i love this album, can anyone give me any tips on how to spot a bootleg or where they are likely to come from or anything like that, cheers.

Has anyone done a thread on how to spot a bootleg? I have 2-3 QOTSA bootleg albums. One of them is a copy of the debut album with the alternate cover art from the Man's Ruin edition. It was pretty easily identified by somewhat blurry cover art, a small black bar crossing out some information that I'm not sure of, and a thin cardboard cover. Still, it looks cool, and the sound is okay. Yes, I bought a copy of the legit reissue a few months back and it does sound a lot better.

I also have one that is the Kyuss/QOTSA split that Man's Ruin put out individually on two 10" records, then compiled onto one cd in about '96. According to what I was able to find on line, there was never a vinyl comp issued back then, but some "unofficial" Man's Ruin editions issued in 2005. However, there was something that puzzles me. I picked it up, figuring it's bootleg, but inside is a postcard touting the original Kyuss release from the mid-90s. This appears to be a legit promo piece. The printing and everything looks like what Man's Ruin put out for many of their releases. So I'm a little confused by that.

I recently picked up a compilation of QOTSA b-sides and covers that appears to be something of a white label release. No upc code, label name, nothing. Other than the song titles there really isn't any other information at all. Kind of an oddball, but being a fan I thought I'd grab it. Here's the cover:


I haven't run across another copy of it since. Anyone else know anything about it?
