Anyone using Musical Fidelity V-LPS?

Further modification, I replaced all the electorlytic capacitors with Panasonic FC caps, and improvement is noticeable.

Next I will desolder the two 5534 op amp, solder 8 pin sockets so I can try other op amps, I am looking at trying the Burr Brown 134 and the NE5534 (the VLPS uses the JRC NJM5534DD). A friend tried the Burr Brown 627 and he liked it (the 627 is too expensive for my taste  )

Just a quick update, there is two 10uf electrolytic capacitor near the final stage opamp, I replaced this with Panasonic FC series 10uf, 25V bypassed with 0.1uf Vishay MKP (I think it is 8347 or 8437?), and this make a huge improvement!

I am curious about the V-LPS and how it compares sound-wise with the Cambridge 640p. I am using a P3/RB-250/2M Bronze combo into a Cambridge C500 preamp. The preamp is feeding a Parasound HCA-800II power amp, which drives a pair of vintage Vandersteen 1's. The phono stage on the C500 just isn't cutting it and sounds very cheap, though the rest of the preamp is very transparent and performs quite well. The 2M Bronze has detail for days, but I need a phono stage with more richness and depth to complement it. Will the V-LPS fit the bill, or is the 640p better?

After reading some posts on the V-LPS I sold my 640P and bought a slightly used V-LPS. After it arrives I'll post my thoughts on how they compare, I plan on getting one of the regulated power supplies like the Pyramid which is supposedly a nice upgrade for approx. $20.00.

Received my V-LPS and sold off my 640P. So far the V-LPS does nothing special with the stock power supply. So far I have to say I prefer the 640P, but that's going off sonic memory which is not very reliable. I'll try one of the power supplies and see if it lifts the performance.

I bought a 640p to replace my fono mini (no mc) and am disappointed. Saps the life out of my vinyl.

I have the V-LPS, with the regulated power supply. I compared stock wall wart to regulated PS, and the difference is notable--use the regulated if you can.

Then the comparisons I have done with it:
>Cambridge 640p (V-LPS very close, but 3 other listeners picked v-lps besides me)
>Rolls VP-129 (nobody of 4 people thought it even close--notably muddy lows and rolled-off highs)
>Rolls VP-29 (surprisingly close at 1/3 price, but still not quite as good as v-lps)
>NAD PP-2 (sounded almost exactly like cambridge 640p, but all four agreed v-lps just a little better)

I agreed with all 3 of my friends who listened using a jolida 202 tube amp, and a thorens turntable (forgot model, but 80's vintage pretty high end), that the v-lps delivered better low end and airier high end on the Klipsch LaScalas.

On my Rega Planar 3, with Yaqin el84 tube amp and Klipsch KG-2s, I felt the same, but only comparing the VP-129 and VP-29. It's possible that the tube vp-129 doesn't mate well with full tube amps, so I am not trashing it, just saying it didn't work well in the otherwise tube systems tested on.

I may have jumped the gun stating my preference for the CA 640P over the V-LPS. I bought my V-LPS used not knowing if it was burned in yet and still using the stock power supply. After using the V-LPS I must say it sounds more musical than the 640P with slightly weeker bass but more three dimensional, the two are very close which makes the V-LPS the better value, still haven't ordered the reg. power supply yet!

I also purchased one of these units, is it bad to leave the unit turned on when not in use since it doesn't have a power switch?

When I had the upgraded power supply (Tripplite PR3a), I left it on all the time except when I went on vacation. Now, I have the V-PSU II, but I still leave it on all the time. When I was using the stock wall wart, both the wall wart and the V-LPS (and V-DAC for that matter) were warmish to the touch; now they are always basically room-temperature, so I feel safe always leaving them on. Also, because they are low voltage, so no real fire hazard.

I use a rechargable Lion 12v battery in place of the PSU - not sure if it sounds better but the noisefloor measures slightly less.

I bought this amp at Christmas and thought it was good for the money. But kept reading about the improvements a regulated power supply would give and thought oh yeah! Just by chance I found an old 12v regulated supply from an old keyboard but the dc connector was too big. Quick trip to Maplin for an adaptor and wow. The difference is noticeable, more than I had expected. Playing the Shadows and the guitars come to life, best $1.60 I have spent.

Hi All

I know this post is old, but I still hope you can help me?
What should the specification for a regulated power supply be? I can read that everyone recommend using a regulated power supply since the difference is big.

Can any of you please help me here? I need the specification for the power supply so I can gain the extra benefits from my new V-LPS II.

Hey RasmusHC

If you find out something about the power supply. Would you please let me know? I am in the same situation as you. I was wondering if this could do the trick? Anyone?
