A Kind of Blue and a bit Mike New - Changing my top plate an

Postby hamish_gill » 17 Apr 2010 17:26

This morning i have set about changing the top plate and the baring in my techie 1210... i though it was going to be really difficult, but it was actually pretty easy.

i had the top bit blasted and sprayed by a local company who does a lot for my mates bmw motorsport company, the finish isn't perfect, but... it was free... i didn't even have to pay for the paint ... happy days!!

here is where i started

Image

took off the platter and the plastic shield underneath

Image

disconnected all the cables and undid all the screws

Image

removed the old bearing and took out the pcb/motor - fitted the bearing

Image

transferred and fitted it into blue top plate

Image

that was the bit i was most concerned about done...

Image

next i took the base off and removed the arm

Image

i dont need this switch, it dont do squat since the was put in

Image

removed switch pcb and put it in to blue top bit

Image

same for pitch fader and stylus light

Image

fitted the arm

Image

reassembled the rest of the tt

Image

A kind of blue techie with mike new bearing complete

Image

this seemed remarkably appropriate!

so, how does it sound... well... very very nice!.. im thinking that the improvment in sound must be at least 95% blue top plate and 5% mike new ;)
i do think it really is a damn shame that the only bit of the mike new that is visible is that little bit a dark metal poking out the top... that really is a pretty amazing bit of kit... and its gold... it would match my oc9 really well!

in reality .. it does sound very good indeed, but its a brand new cart and brand new phono pre.. so im holding off babbling about it for now... im going to let it settle for a few weeks... i am so far though very very impressed

for those who don't know me, possibly most people here, i am a very happy customer of ...
i have his psu, isonoe feet and oc9 from him, his recommended mat, a jelco 250 i bought off martin (who just replaced it with a dynavector)a mike new bearing,.. and a bruil weight :)

hi Dave :)

Done,
it's started doing that sticking between poles on the press of "start" again .. Onces it's goin it runs to speed no probs and acuratly ... Then when I press stop it spins faster unless stop it with my hand... Once it's stopped it's stopped though and won't spin again until I press start... That seems to me to not only be odd ... But also in contradiction with the laws of phisics... How can it spin faster unitil I stop it if I have pressed stop... Surely pressing stop stops electricity going into the coils? ... I could understand if I could restart it by hand spinning it agian, but I can't, I have to press start... Do you see what I'm getting at dave? ... It just don't make no sence!

Ok dave cheers, yeah that's cool, I just started on the evening drinking about half hour ago... So yeah... Have a think when you got nothing else to do and let me know.. Like I said it spins correctly once it's going, so it's not like I can't spin ma disks :)
cheers for the help ... And the pointer on the black thing!

Hamish

You did trim the protruding wires at the back of the PCB, exactly in accordance with the instructions, before fitting the bearing, didn't you?

Cheers

Yep, trimed them right back, there is clearance between the joints and the metal of the bearing...
There's quite a few familiar faces round these parts isn't there!!
