That is a funny one, I almost consider them different songs. I really like both versions. In fact, Bowie's LSTNT is a good example of not just covering a song but radically reinterpreting it in a good way.
Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is one of the most awesome covers ever. He redefines the song and his version is so far ahead of others it just isn't funny.
A couple others of note include:
The Rolling Stones: Not Fade Away - a superb version of the Buddy Holly track.
Bill Haley and the Comets: Rock Around the Clock - a fairly impressive B side!
