I rather like the meddly of early pop songs on The Carpenter's "Now & Then" album. The whole album never ceases to raise my mood.

That is a funny one, I almost consider them different songs. I really like both versions. In fact, Bowie's LSTNT is a good example of not just covering a song but radically reinterpreting it in a good way.

Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is one of the most awesome covers ever. He redefines the song and his version is so far ahead of others it just isn't funny.

A couple others of note include:
The Rolling Stones: Not Fade Away - a superb version of the Buddy Holly track.
Bill Haley and the Comets: Rock Around the Clock - a fairly impressive B side!

thats why i like the bowie one.maybe i was being a bit too diplomatic and trying not to offend stones fans.im a stones fan too.so i will now offend dylan fans and say yes jimis version of all along the watchtower is the definitive version.
id also say that the byrds didnt just do a better version of mr tambourine man.rodger mcguinn invented an entirely new 12 string jingle jangle guitar style for it.the byrds are just so influential its incredible.sweetheart of the rodeo and all that came through gram parsons and the eagles etc.
deep purples version of hush is a good one.was that a joe south song?
oh and the jam doing the beatles taxman eh i think it was called start.an excellent piece of plagiarism.

Gotta agree on Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower that's been mentioned so many times.

Then there is Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun) by M.A.C.C. from Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix.
M.A.C.C. = Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron.
Great version of a great song!

Also agree on Cowboy Junkies version of Sweet Jane.

Another fav of mine is Willie Nelson's version of Always On My Mind.

And what about Sinead O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares 2 U?!

The Human League - You've Lost That Loving Feeling is a brilliant cover.

I have to agree with some of those already stated in earlier posts, especially Bauhaus doing Ziggy Stardust, and Joy Division doing Sister Ray.

I know this one was very commercial, but the Flying Lizzards doing Money was very good.

Bauhaus's Ziggy Stardust is very good. On the same 12" single, they also did Third Uncle, an excellent cover of a Brian Eno track.

Okay, the greatest cover in the history of covers is easily America by Yes, originally written by Simon & Garfunkel. Listen to S&G's first, then listen to the Yes version. Just.... amazing.
