When is any magazine supposed to be a savior of any piece of gear just because someone is fond of it? If there were any publications protesting the loss of specific lathes I would have supposed it would be those publications that deal with "pro" gear and recording/mastering tools.

The point is the exact opposite. It is not what a magazine is supposed to do, but what it chooses to do.

That Stereophile does not give a damn about history, recording and vinyl authoring equipment is not an excuse. Nor does it have a responsible to do those things.

Stereophile may not care if there's no Neumann lathe left on the planet. I would insist that they should. But that is also irrelevant. And I'm not trying to make Stereophile care.

I cannot imagine a worse magazine than Stereophile. It is written by narcissistic sycophants for narcissistic sycophants.

Stereophile is aimed at people who listen to music not those who make it.

I put no words in anyone's mouth. I merely questioned berating a publication for not following someones specific list of favorite gear.

Stereophile is not the same magazine it was when JGH started it. Neither is this hobby or anything else.

I know what Stereophile is. No, it has not changed one bit in 50 years. It always was indifferent to anything but its narrow interests.

But My TT once analog, sme M2, ortofon cadenza black with a rega ios phono.

best turntable in what way?from a pure engineering point of view,meaning tolerances/finish etc or from a sound point of view:-the two don't always go together,thing is though to give an educated opinion a person would have had to have used/examined/listened to all turntables pertaining to be the best,and I doubt anyone has:-thread should be renamed"favourite turntable"!

I have had a few... Pro-ject, Technics SL1210, Sony TTS4000, Thorens TD160 etc. I now have a technics SP10, two Garrard 401's, a Garrard 301, a Lenco L70 and and a Lenco 88. For me, the most beautiful is the Garrard 301, the technically most refined and robust the Technics SP10. But my all time favourite is the Garrard 401. Bullet proof, with great drive and bass. The Lenco's are cute as well. Idler drive really is special

Of the high end ( read obscenely expensive) turntables I've listened to I'd rank them thus:-
1:Continuum 'Coliburn'
2: Rockport 'Sirius'
3: Walker "Black Diamond'
Sadly no's 1 & 3 are styled like a 1950's Pontiac but I guess I could just manage to put up with the hideous arm on the Continuum if I painted all the chrome on the TT black.
In general though, turntables that cost an arm and a leg are invariably styled to scream "Look at how much money I've spent on this" I'm constantly amazed at how much bling can be thrown as the simple idea of rotating an LP at 33.1/3 RPM..
Ranking TT's by sonics though is full of traps. To be sure of any subjective judgement you'd have to hear each TT with the same cartridge, phono-preamp etc in the same room to be sure of what you're hearing.

The best that I've heard is the Audio Note TT-3, which I happened to hear this past Saturday. Until I heard that table, I did not think that any particular table was dramatically better than another. The sound is extremely propulsive without being rough sounding or strident. The sound was extremely full bodied, warm and rich without sounding sluggish and murky--all other tables I've heard trade off warmth and richness against clarity/speed/dynamics. The table had a Helius arm and an Audio Note Io cartridge. I've heard that cartridge before, but never sounding THAT good.

I have an opportunity to purchase the table, but, it is extremely impractical in some respects. It has three motors that are driven from three separate power supplies. Each power supply is the size of a decent monobloc amplifier, and each draws 800 watts. The table itself is not much bigger than my Basis Debut IV table, but, I have no room for the power supply and I have no idea how anyone powers up three 800 watt power supplies unless one uses more than one 20 amp cicuit.

Yeah,my thoughts exactly. And you have to hear them in blind-test,cause everbody knows how deceiving looks can be.
Personaly i never had interest in state-of-the-art or high end turntables cause
they offer to less bang for the buck. Its nice to see and and hear them on a
show in combination with a monster setup but thats it for me. Im a music lover
not a technic fetishist. And money spent rather went into "software" than "hard-
ware".
On the other hand i like some decks of the late seventies/early eighties very
much. Made for a still competitiv market they are often found in the upper middle
class. Like for example SL-1600MK2,DP-60L,PS-X65,CS721,TD-320,HT-500/II,YP-D71
T-65,KD-850,PL-600,DQ-43. Just to name a few. To be honest one of those with a perfect fitting cart is way good enough for me.
