the home of the turntable

Cheeky I know ....but thought I would try my own....

the thin end of the wedge

the use of a few choice words in the marketing/advertising spiel, such as "exotic, purposed-designed" and "very expensive isolating material" and "closed cell, cross-linked ethylene copolymer structure" ensures unknowing people think it is worth the silly asking price, and that the product has truly been made from these "purpose designed" components

Agreed, if the material really was purpose-designed then he'd have patented it and wouldn't mind explaining a little more about its unique properties. If not then its just so much BS, any other claims for the device have to be taken with a pinch of salt and the DIY route makes even more sense.

Great, let us know how he gets on. Unlike most tweaks this looks like one whose effect should be easily heard.

Very interesting...I especially liked this bit:
"......
The Isolator costs £85. My first instinct on seeing something like this is to look to see how I could achieve the same effect for less. I looks like it should be easy, after all it seems so simple, but when you look carefully, even if you did have access to the 'wonder stuff' it would be very difficult to make a copy - I wouldn't know where to start. By that measure alone it must therefore be at least reasonable value for money. But the problem is that is makes a difference wholly disproportionate to its appearance or cost...."

I wonder how Rob42 has got on with his?????

He would love to say - it was fab, but the week-end didnt go as expected.
Will do my best to find a little time to make up an isolator { thanks for the plates Gerry } ( have just read the tnt site, so its not neoprene, epp maybe, have some of that too - used to make airframes )

The reason for the delay was a new toy from Arthur ( ex- pink triangle, Funk master) a new matt!!
I didnt think it would make much difference on PT platter - but it has so kept playing vinyl. :D

The Isolator - again!!

Hello Rob & Gerard

This stuff between the plates. Can only be a butyl derivative. I made numerous experiments a few years ago trying to find an acoustical dampening agent. Nothing worked properly until the word 'butyl' cropped up. Check this word on google. You may even make a better job than the GBP85 item. Also, try aluminium for the plates as this is a sonically 'dead' metal. If you're worried about the locating studs, press-fit them.

Blue Angel

Yes the plate is aluminum. I've only used one as I don't think I could apply glue thin enough or even enough....hence the double sided sticky foam...which is open cell and has a good compression rebound.

Johnnie

Trust me.....the alignment of a DL103 is sooooo much easier with this on than off!!! The plate is the same width as the cartridge and have the nuts glued to top late makes moving a doddle.

Here is another device which has been around a while and costs about £32:
