Which album?

name that tune

Which album?

Postby jsmiddleton4 » 28 Aug 2005 21:57

I started a post and there have been a few responses about where to buy albums but I was also wondering about which album. Here's what I mean. For several groups/singers/bands there is one album that just nails them on the head. The one album IF you want to have an album of that band/group/singer in your collection you'd have to have that one album.

As an example:

Jethro Tull I'd say "Thick as a Brick" would be THE album.

Billy Joel, I think I'd have to say "Piano Man" as THE album.

So in your album collections, what is THE album for the groups/bands/singers you own LP's for?

Its tricky to know where to start but if I had to choose just one album by these bands...

Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught us
Bauhaus - Burning from the Inside
New Order - Closer
Psychic TV - Towards Thee Infinite Beat
The Smiths - Meat is Murder
Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation
Foetus - Nail
Marc and the Mambas - Torment and Toreros
Eminem - The Marshal Mathers LP
Roni Size - In the Mode

LOL I always get Movement and Closer mixed up

FWIW I reckon Movement is the best New Order album and Closer the best Joy Division outing. They're in my 'favourites' section they get played so often...even after all this time.

Well I'm thinking like Eat a Peach by the Allman Brothers. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. :)

Or Civilized Evil by Jean Luc Ponty.......

like:-Foetus - Nail
..me neither...
However, I've got the original 1969 Pink Island label (mint) of "Stand Up" - also the '71 "Aqualung".
Only otherwise ever heard "Minstrel in the Gallery" - about 30 years ago(!!) (I'm mainly 'into' Classical..) - so don't have any idea how those compare to "Thick As A Brick"

Seems like a Generation-Gap hereabouts..

Cheers!

Aqualung probably right up there with Thick as a Brick.

It just seems to me with the incredible depth of knowledge on this forum that we could assemble a shopping list for building a great library of vinyl.

Even with 'just' one Band/album, I guess the question is 'what size would the Library be'?

I think that above 500 odd (about a 10foot 'run'), any collection starts to take on a life of its own.

I've probably some 13,000 items now - completely unmanageable - and scarcely 'playable' within a lifetime - so your idea is 'attractive'..but surely nobody would be happy with just one 'best' album!?

:D Hi Frank, ... I think you have found a buyer for it (I'm talking about JD), but ...

but you have to give me your avatar (I&S) too or (OR) a Homer talking beer opener (I'd prefer it nihongo speaking, ... "mmm ... biruuuuuu"), ...

Do you agree?

Here is the beginning of my list. I'll try to add some more soon.

AC/DC - Let There Be Rock (and Back In Black)
Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
Allman Brothers - Eat A Peach (and Filmore East)
Aphrodite's Child - 666
Argent - All Together Now
Brian Auger - Befour
Average White Band - AWB
Aztec Two Step - Aztec Two Step
Bachman Turner Overdrive - Bachman Turner Overdrive (and Not Fragile)
Beatles - so many great albums - get most of them
Blondie - AutoAmerican
Blood, Sweat and Tears - Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills - Super Session
Blue Oyster Cult - Blue Oyster Cult (also Secret Treaties and Agents of Fortune)
David Bowie - Young Americans (and Diamon Dogs)
Dave Brubeck - Take Five (and Jazz Impressions Of New York)
Sandy Bull -Fantasias
The Byrds - untitled

I did not include any of the "Best Of" albums. Many of them are the best choice if you are going to get only one album by a group.

If you think some of these groups had better albums - post them!
