NEAT P 68 H turntable

Postby docjowe » 12 Jun 2005 20:40

Today I bought me a NEAT P 68 H TT / idler, 4 speeds / sold in France in the '60s under the JASON brand name.
I found it on a "vide grenier" sale (empty your attic)
Ortofon 9" arm, no headshell.
I'm through the restoration process... tough job, very noisy idler.
motor (a big motor) is ok, but start up is a little slow; maybe I'llcheck the capacitors ( a huge paper/oil piece) .
check out the pics!

I welcome any informations on it and on the arm which is a Ortofon, allthou not written on it, only a "made in Danemark" on the pillar.
any hint about the model?

Hi,

That is a tasty idler drive deck. Is it a synchronous motor?

Looks like a dual capacitor with one half for the switch suppressor and the other for the motor. Maybe the motor capacitor is a phase shift for one winding of the motor, as Thorens do with their older 110v motor in the 150. Just guessing, don't shoot me. :)

Ortofon arm on the bay like yours -

hi, colin

well it reads on the motor:

4 pole hysteresis synchronous motor
Neat Onkyo Denki Co.LTD
90/110 V
50/60 Hz
speed :1500/1800
input 28/24
well i dont know a lot about these figures

it features a transformer 110/220 v selectable operation, which I suppose was retrofitted by the French agent.

the motor and spindle is dead silent but the idler is reallynoisy, i'll see for a replacement

and thanks for the link to the ortofon arm...looks rather sought after.

I have a big problem here: everyting is ok but the idler wheel : gum has dried out on the periphery, and even after a good spin on sand paper, (not in the TT but on a hand drill) its grip is lost.
I've tried a rubber band, but it keeps falling off.
I've made a google search on "resurfacing idler wheels" but I found nothing really handy.
i've been on "west-tech Services" and emailed them

does any one on the vinyl engine know how to diy a new wheel, i mean glueing a new rim on the old one like they do with tires...

thanks for any idea...

another "rejuvinates" rubber whells by turning in a lathe, the treating the rubber with some chemicals...
any idea what solvent can recover hardened rubber?

ortofon, ping idleman

Postby colclarke » 15 Jun 2005 00:09

Hi again

HiFI year book 1970 has 3 Ortofon arm pics, yours looks to be the SMG 212. The info states it is a 12" arm but I think they may be referring to total length. It is the only s shaped arm, the others being j shaped.

As regards the idler wheel, it may be worth googling for 'rubber renew' or 'simple green'. These are products used to renovate hardened wheels.

Hth

yes, colin, I've been on the Asylum also and learned about some "rubber rejuvinator" used for printer rollers and also a " gummi pflege" used for automobile door rubber maintenance: I'll give them a try.

I did not find much about "S" shaped ortofon arms yet, thanks for the information!

Well, I bought a automobile spray for the door rubbers preservation and restoration: did not work, sort of silicone fluid, did not soften the rubber.

I spoke yesterday with my garage mechanic, who told me that he used to "soften" rubber bands in soaking them a night long in some liquid machine washer soap (you name it : skip, tide etc. )

That is what I've done : overnight bath in plain "X.tra" detergent, water rincing then cloth drying:

Now the rubber is much softer and flexible than before and not tacky at all.
After a few spins on some abrasive paper on the edge and here it goes.

Tried it on the TT: instant speed up, no more speed variations and much quieter too.

So who's next to try it?

Excellent tip! I wonder if it could be used to improve old belts that have lost their grip but not actually stretched?

ortofon pics

Postby colclarke » 17 Jun 2005 00:06

Hi

Agreed, that is useful info for the idler drive brigade.

I have uploaded 2 pics to the forum section, showing the 1971 Ortofon arms and (short)descriptions.

they saiy 12", but mine is a 9"...
maybe Ortofon measure the total length where others measure the tip/pivot distance?

Ortofon Arms

Postby Brian C. » 17 Jun 2005 09:52

Hi Joseph :)

Ortofon use the stylus - pillar axis length in their nomenclature I believe.
Thus your overall 12" SMG 212 indicates 212mm (just over 8") stylus - pillar distance.
Their overall 16 inch length arms are designated 309, indicating a 309mm (just over 12") distance.

Brian.

hi, Brian
yes, that is what I guessed....
now, I need a proper headshell, as the denon dl103/ ADC magnesium head is not heavy enough to balance the arm.
anyway, I'm bidding on a SPU cart, which I hope will match.

Hi,

Have you measured from the tt spindle to the centre of the arm pivot? I wonder if that is 212mm? Would make it about standard for a 9" arm.

Just a thought.
