Best Debut Album Of All Time?

name that tune

Postby annex » 17 Oct 2009 08:14

Suicide's eponymous debut.
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth (actually their only album proper, which makes it even more remarkable!)

Not his first album, sorry. Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. was the first,
Oh crap, how right you are. I stand very corrected. Also embarrassed.

Maybe not best of all time, but here's a few newer debuts that are definitely impressive:
Beirut - Gulag Orkestar
Rage Against the Machine self titled
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
For the older stuff:
The Allman Brothers Band self titled
The Band - Music from Big Pink
The Who - My Generation
Best debuts of all time have to be Led Zepplin's I, Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill, and Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced.

The answers you see with this type of thread often puzzle me. the original post was

Best Debut album of all time?

Thats singular NOT plural, so why do so many posters insist on listing an endless stream of albums 2/3/4 even 6 they cant all be the best ever.

So come on guys don't sit on the fence just pick ONE

Read the first post; three choices allowed. I do agree with you that more than that and non debut's is beyond the scope of the post.
Insert clever phrase here!

Black Sabbath (like others have picked. I do not believe that kind of sound was around before the album).

Van Halen - Van Halen. I think this was a great debut album.

Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and hell yeah, Van Halen! All great debuts, and The Sex Pistols too.

Incidentally for Pearl Jam fans, I was watching a public TV story about Austin City Limits being the longest running music show on TV and they mentioned that Pearl Jam is going to be on Austin City Limits in November.

REM - Murmur

Make up the top 3.

and
Moby Grape - Moby Grape

Roberta Flack - First Take
Nina Nastasia - Dogs
