A few further improvements to the RD110

A bit of time at home and I'm finally there (except one small touch yet to arrive).

Firstly added a Heed Orbit 2 PSU after another VE member suggested an improvement on the power side of the story. What a simple and wonderful improvement. Jet black back grounds, better transients and more detail extracted than I care to think of with the added bonus of wonderful timing due to this unit. I now have my 45rpm back and even better; at the press of a button, so no more fidly belt changes

Any one looking for a simple improvement to any decent deck ought to give consideration this way.

Had a few problems with a new phono stage in matching the OC9 so went back to my old ways with the trusty (and superb) Project SE. Brilliant move, and to boot the new Rotel (ex Rolleye) has weaved a bit of magic to the PT and the Blue note.



A new dust cover from the Red-One and the deck is there; with the added little touch of a personallised name plate (note the new model title)








Still appreciating the sound with this new baby and I am just so pleased with what I am hearing. For what started life as an old hat TT, the moves forward have been worth every bit of effort and planning.

Oh and I must get some pics posted of the PT1 as it is now wearing a new CF top plate and as I said now linked with a Rotel RQ phono stage sounding very sexy inded.

What's the isolation platform and spikes you've got under the RD 110 SF-Edition? Home made as well ? Just curious.

Speaking of dustcovers, I can only wish myself a nice lid like yours for the Axis SF-Edition. All customising allowed. You've already got several models out there!

The spikes I've had lying around for the past year or two and they conveniently screwed in to the bottom section of the deck. Cheap Chinese items which cost something like £5 for 8 on The Bay. Nicely made as well. A bargain.

The iso platform is from Inspire. I couldn't buy the acrylic alone cheaper than I paid for the complete thing, never mind taking in to account the cost for the isopods.

Wow Satanfriendly that is a lovely looking deck. A real major overhaul and I guess a massive improvement in sound on the original?
I`d love to have the time, knowledge, tools and space to do something similar.
Infact I had bought an RD80 with this in mind and priced up a new plinth for just under £200 but changed my mind.
Can I ask where you got your new plinth and was it more or less than the quote I got? I haven`t totally abandoned the idea of a rebuild like this one.
Is it fairly straight forward to cut / drill CF?

Thank you Bubba. Believe it or not your own work was partial inspiration.

I would say £200 for a plinth is vastly over priced. The wood (ash) costs a measly £15 (and I still have some left over), the routing I did myself, but the construction of the box itself I had a friend do for £10. I couldn't achieve the same accuracy required.

I'm sure if you can get hold of some nice wood there is bound to be someone local who can do the basics at a very cheap cost. My friend quoted me £25 for all the work, but the time for the routing was a bit of an isuue being as he is quite busy and I am limited with my working away.

I can get you a price for the RD80 if you like. Just PM me. I reckon less than £50.

The CF you can drill easily enough, but cuting can be a bit of a sod. They say you do it with a Stanley knife. Can you Hell! Use a ceramic cutter the same as they use for tiles. I cut the larger hole for the armboard with a Dremmel cutting disc.

I don't have a clue what the original deck sounded like as I never set it up. I am more than pleased with it how it worked out and how it sounds. It's every bit as good (although different) to my PT.

Admitted by the time I added the Heed Orbit and the iso platform the costs stopped being budget, but to get that far was relatively cheap for what equates to a quality front end. They were just 'add-ons' I saved for by not going ashore at every opportunity while away. That is quite a sacrifice when in Brazil!

edition, supplied with a certain 7" by the Stones...

Seriously, the rather roomy dust cover and the new light coloured plinth
gives it a very attractive look. If it sounds as good as it looks, you're a
lucky (or rather skilled) guy.

My work was a partial inspiration? Well I take that as quite a compliment, so thankyou even though I can`t see how that it is the case.

I sold the RD80 I did have as the 9 TT`s I owned were cluttering up my flat so some have had to go. But the idea of a full re-make of an RD80 or 110 is still there but on hold for a while so I will undoubtedly be back to you for some advice and the contact details of your friend who built the plinth.

The woodworkers / carpenters / joiners I have contacted around here are really reluctant to take on this kind of work unfortunately which is why I sourced out Henk, but £200 for a new plinth was not worth it.

How`s yours sounding? Does the Heed PSU make a huge difference? I am tempted to try one for my Heybrook. The MOSE / Hercules I had for my LP12 was a great inprovement, but I sold this when I got rid of all things LP12 related.

Like I said if ever you are looking at a new plinth and I'll get a quote from my friend here in the Pool.

I've been following your tinkling around with RD40's etc for some time and yup you and a number of others do give some inspiration to go somewhere and actually do something.

The Heed does make a notable difference. It's as simple as can be to get up and running. Most noticable is the sense of timing the deck shows which in turn leads to improvements elsewhere. The background really does go 'that black'.

Plus of course I have my 45 back which I lost in the project.
