New, Searchable Cartridge Database

Postby EdAInWestOC » 08 Mar 2005 11:17

I have been in the process of creating a cartridge database. The result of the initial efforts can be viewed at http://www.cartridgedb.com

The site include a simple search engine and a template driven result page with integrated voltage gain calculator and resonant frequency calculator (buttons appear if required data is present in cartridge's data record). There is also a resonant frequency "evaluator" page that takes your arm's effective mass and uses simple calculations to produce a table of expected resonant frequencies for a range of cartridges masses and dynamic compliance figures.

I have collected the data from a variety of sources. If you have any corrections or additions you would like to see, please contact me at edaris@hotmail.com

The site has been tested with Internet Explorer 6 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.1.

Thanks,
Ed

Very nice indeed. Is it OK to add it to my links page?

I hope everyone enjoys it. I also hope we can centralize the collective knowledge here into a resource that benefits us all (I sound too much like a damm politician with that).

Seriously though...I need as much info as I can get to populate the database with. I'll be adding as much data and documentation as I can store.

This interactive database is fantastic. Thanks for offering it.

I have found that for the Audio Technica AT440ML, the static compliance is 40mm/mN and the dynamic compliance is 10 mm/mN. I have found this on a couple different sights. This info may fill a couple blanks for you.

Ed, I have given your your database a cursory lookover, but I am already convinced that it will quickly become a classic reference. These days, many people who retain an interest in the 'vinyl engine' are aware of the factors which should be considered in choosing a cartridge. In addition, NOS, and old friends which are rediscovered in a lay away somewhere are slowly becoming orphaned in terms of comprehensive specifications. Your database will be appreciated in our common quest to keep them spinning. Thanks! — Lorne

Appreciate it...

Thanks Lorne,
I appreciate your remarks. Its been quite a chore researching and adding the data, but its something that I felt was needed. The available internet data was way too fragmented to be of much use. It seemed like a logical thing to do.

I am still involved in the initial data load for the site and anything that anyone can add/correct is always welcomed.

Have A Nice Holiday Weekend,
Ed

Thanks Bill,
Have a good day down there. Or is it actually the right side of the planet and we're down there? Obviously a point of reference concept.

Hi Ed,

Just came onto this. What an absolutely fantastic resource. A question though. how are you doing the arm/cart resonance calculations?

The formula I've always used was:

159 / SQRT( (arm effective mass + cart mass + fixings) x Compliance )

(found the same formula on a number of websites

plugging a few figures into this formula is coming up with different figures than the database.

Just as an example I've plugged in figures for an Ortofon 530 and a Denon DL-160 and from the above formula on a 10g arm I get figures of 7.95 Hz and 12.6 Hz respectively. Whereas the Db gives results of 12 Hz and 16 Hz (I also assumed 1g for mounting hardware).

No probs if my calcs are wrong (always happy to learn), but thought you might want to know.

(Oh for ref I used compliance figures of 25 and 10 and cart mass of 5.0 and 4.8g for the Ortofon and the Denon - which tally with what is in the db)

You're absolutely right

Postby EdAInWestOC » 19 Apr 2005 00:18

Somehow the parameters that were passed to the function that calculates the resonant frequency got flipped around. The cartridge mass and its compliance were swapped around...accounting for the problem.

I have fixed the problem and many thanks for your keen eye.

PLEASE NOTE: The cartridge database is now available at t new URL http://www.cartridgedb.com

Thanks Again,
Ed
