name that tune

Dave Brubeck

There is a fantastic vocal version of Take Five by Maria Joao a Portugese jazz vocalist. The vinyl sonics are also a killer.

Pretty rare on vinyl but is the best version I have heard.

Currently doin' heavy rotation in my system are the Brazilian vocalist Joyce and Nigerian afro-funk king Fela Ransome Kuti.

Too many tunes... Too little time....

Best regards

Legendary Masters of The Piano ( Classsics Record Library SWV 6633 ).

This is a recording featuring live performances by among others:
Claude DeBussey
Ignace Paderewski
Edvard Grieg
Maurice Faure
Emile Saint-Saens
and Richard Strauss.

These performances were originally recorded on a Welte recording piano between 1906 and 1913. A restored Welte Vorsetzer was paired up with a Steinway Concert Grand and the results recorded in 1962.

There is some detailed information in this link: http://users.rcn.com/bobmer.javanet/Bad_Comz.htm

These recordings sound lovely and are not a mere historical curiosity. They would be marvellous even if one knew nothing of their origin.

I'm making an effort to play stuff I'd been ignoring, particularly from those tasty Readers Digest boxes, just for the sake of discovery. Tonight it was the Festival of Light Classical Music set, Nutcracker and Swan Lake excerpts from record #12. This might be the best RD box of all, and these ballet numbers don't disappoint.

Even if you don't think you like classical music, find a good copy of this box. It's very common, dirt cheap on the used market, and the music is exceptionally accessible and fun. Sonically, most of the sides are demo quality if the vinyl is in decent shape (and not trashed by a previous owner's mistracking "needle"). The "Carmen" and "La Valse" cuts are spectacular.

The Fall - This Nations Saving Grace - 1985

One of their most accessible albums before 1991's Shiftwork and includes the classic Fall songs L.A. and Spoilt Victorian Child.

:) deck here on a blue note roll this morning.

there appears to have been a blip in the time-space-dimension thingy with the consequence that i seem to have aquired an extra hour of life?!!

first up on the mission 775sm is lee morgan's 'delightfulee' then donald byrd's 'free form' followed by blue mitchell's 'down with it' but i'm about to break up the blue and white hegemony with a riverside contribution in the shape of yusef latiff's 'the centaur and the phoenix'

later it will be off with the beret and shades and on with the 'pimp suit' while i run through some 70's soul funk disco before i trudge off to the satanic mill known as work...

RCA Italiana Opera Orchestra and Chorus, "Un Ballo in maschera", apart from Leontyne Price as Amelia, Shirley Verett as a fantastic Ulrica. This is vinyl at its best.

The following LPs are getting regular platter time at my place.

Having said that my original copy of "LKJ in Dub" is pretty much worn out and while I do have the CD rerelease, it has no bass, which is pretty scandalous for a dub album, so if any one knows where to source a vinyl copy, I'm all ears. Thanx, Joel.

Lucinda Williams: "Sweet Old World" (2003)
Patricia Barber: "Modern Cool" (2000?)
UB40: "Present Arms in Dub" (1980s)
Linton Kwesi Johnson: "LKJ in Dub" (1980)
Gong: "Expresso" (1976)
Soft Machine: "Seven" (1976)

dub sources

Postby lungfish108 » 22 Nov 2004 19:10

Starboy,

Many thanks for the URL!

Seems as if the UK supports a lot more dub artists than this side of the pond. Too bad I never took advantage of these riches when I lived in England.

Best regards,

Joel.
