strange problem with playing LPs

Postby Apokalypse » 06 Oct 2004 15:00

I posted this question in another thread but I thought it deserved its own thread.

My TT is a technics sl120 with an sme 3009.

I have another question for which I think I know the answer of... but I don't like the answer so I'll ask someone else. With my particular record player on some LPs (probably about 1 in 20) the treble in the right side gets really loud for about 1/2 a second at two particular points on the record (the same spot in the records that it does it on). It has to be the record player because it does it with a few records. I gather it's the stylus riding up high in the groove on that one particular point but I don't know. Any ideas?

Have you adjusted the arm for lateral balance according to SME's instructions?

Well I thought I did... but I'm a novice as this is my first turntable. I could give it another shot. Could this be the problem? I was thinking something along the lines of the bearing wearing out.

It's always a good idea to go through set-up again before looking for problems elsewhere. I think it most unlikely that your SME bearing is shot, those things last for ever.
