Realigning LINN AXIS ...it`s all gone wrong...!

Postby JOIZZY » 17 Dec 2011 22:53

I have just had a brand new Adikt " stylus only replacement " , to original cartridge , fitted to an Akito tone arm. I have owned the AXIS turntable from new , approx 12 years and this is the 3rd stylus. It is located on a wall mounted custom shelf.
My problem is , i have tried to be "too clever" and have messed up the bias and tracking settings and now the system sounds horrible , infact unlistenable.
I have set the tracking dial to 1.75 as per the manual but can`t get the counterbalance bias right at all - having gone all around the counterbalance dial 1 step at a time makes no difference - at no point do i feel its getting better.
What have i done to mess things up so badly ?
Can someone please advise at what point i should be working from ie - where is the " 0 " point before moving up to somewhere around 1.8-1.9.
Thank you in advance.

Hi

What you need to do is:

1) set the bias (aka "anti-skate") to zero. This is the dial just below the arm-rest.

2) Now, turn the whole counterweight (ignore the dial markings for now) until the arm balances or "floats", which means the downforce is set to zero. Next, move the dial ONLY (it turns separately) until "0" is at the top. Finally, turn the whole counterweight so that it moves nearer the arm pivots, until the desired figure (1.75 by the manual, 1.8-1.9 if that's your preference) is at the top on the dial. This should give you the correct downforce/ tracking force.

3) Now you can set the bias/ anti-skate on the other dial to the appropriate figure - about the same as the downforce is a good starting-point, though many like to use a bit less.

Hi Mark , your advice was spot on . I`d forgotton the two dials on the counterbalance were independent of each other !!! Anyway it`s back to normal so thank you very much , J
