Help! Linn LP12 with Mission 774

Postby alter.cat » 10 Sep 2012 10:11

Hello,

as written in the Subject I'm running a Linn LP12 with a Mission 774 arm and a Audio Technica AT33E cartridge.

It was working fine until yesterday, but when I dropped the arm (using the lever) to play a record, this horrendous static noise kicked in. It sounds basically like "ground" noise. I noticed the part hightlighted in Picture 2 was out of place, so I put it again where it should be. Still, when I try to play a record now I still get this noise from the left channel, and there's only music coming from the right channel.

I attach two pics, in case they are of any help.
Any ideas? I'd prefer to avoid taking this to a specialist...

Thanks in advance.

May be time for a re-wire.

Your counterweight is also going to need some attention, looks as if ready to fall off. If this happens the stylus could get badly damaged.

Good luck,

Victor.

Can I rewire myself? :-/ I've never done it before, but hey, my hands are skilled.

have you got multi meter? ideally take the cartridge off and check the wires down to the phono plugs

it could be the cartridge thats at fault

Hi
Before you mess with replacing wiring (the red plug is NLA) disconnect the cartridge from the wiring, get yourself a cheap meter and do a continuity test.

The counterweight is going to need attention, the sorbothane filler has separated from the thumbscrew,a technique that has worked for me in the past, unscrew it and remove it from the stub, open up the gap where it has separated and dribble superglue down the gap making sure none gets onto the thread, then hold the thumbscrew straight to the counterweight, only takes a few seconds to set and all being well the counterweight will be straight again.

ALWAYS use the thumbscrew to adjust the counterweight.

not sure what you mean by out of place:-the part highlighted is the guide for the anti-skate isn't it?was the thread out of the guide?wouldn't have thought that would have given you the problem you encountered, its seems more of an issue with the signal continuity
