Sony ps-x600 turntable does not rotate

My Sony ps-x600 has been in its shipping box for several yrs with the two shipping screws in place.
I removed the two screws, setup the turntable but the platter does not turn when a record is on the mat and the start button is pressed. The tone arm moves to the record normally.

Any suggestions?
