Sony PS-X55 Problem

Postby 114411 » 04 Mar 2012 05:59

Hey

I was given this turntable from a friend to look at.

He told me was working about 6 months ago and now stop working

The problem with it is when you turn it on the 33 speed lights comes on and thats it. None of the buttons do anything or lights come on just the 33 light stays soild. Tried cleaning the sensors below the platter but no joy. The tone arm moves freely but cant be placed on the record as its stuck in the up position.

What could be causing this?

Any help/what to check would be great

Welcome to VE..... :)

No takers so, I'll try......

Download owners and service manual here:

http://www.vinylengine.com/library/sony/ps-x55.shtml

My guess is the "drum assembly brake" and or the surrounding mechanism located on page 33 of 41 of the service manual. Most likely the old grease has frozen this mechanism from turning and allowing the tonearm lift to travel down along the drum lift ramp..... :?: :?: :-k :-k

Good luck.

Fred and based on my experience with my first real tt Sony PS-1800 and recent Sony R2R refirb where the grease used turned into glue and has locked the mechanisms SOLID.......
