Do you use different pickups for playing 45's?

I collect mostly LP's but recently a relative handed me a stack of about sixty 45's. Some are a mess. The 45's got stuck near the floor of a garage and some got heavily water damaged. Others came out near mint.

There is a thread here where some folks explained that some 45's were actually better sound engineered than the original source LP's.

The few I was able to get clean seemed to play very well but I noticed a big difference from label to label, even in the mint ones. The "Amen" recording by Otis Redding on ATCO Records isnt that scratchy but seems to be a terrible recording while the "Stay in My Corner" by The Dells on Cadet Records is kinda tore up but the dynamics jump out at you.

I'd like to know how folks here set up their TT's and pickups preferences to play 45's.

I play my 7 inch 45s on the same table I play my 12 inch Lps on ( I only own one table..) I am thinking about picking up an old changer, then I can make playlist stacks.

Some 45's i bought over the last few months were play-tested on my Linn if in ex+ condition and cleaned, every detail and speck of dust was fully revealed, great sound, though generally i stack them up on my restored record player with its more suitable stylus.

Thanx all. I'm looking forward to adding a couple of new pickups to the collection within the next few months. I'd like to play around with needle setups to see what happens. Obviously a rainy Sunday kind of thing.

I've got about a thousand 45's in my collection, which I occasionnally listen to through two TT's connected to a small mixing table (TTI).
This set up is also very handy if I want to record a tape or a cassette to listen to in the car or have good continuous background music to play during evenings.
For very damaged ones (badly wharped) I still have an old Perpetuum Ebner with crystal cart and sapphire needle with an arm heavy enough to stay in the grooves during playing. These are unfortunately rare records and it is the only way to keep playing them.
The later stereo ones can be played without problems on my TD 166 and 146 as well as on my Dual 1019, with quite good litening pleasure.

I use my Technics SP-25 with Audio-Technica ATP-16T tonearm and I use the Stanton 681A cartridge with conical stylus for 45 playback.

If you have a removable headshell turntable you can change the dimensions on the Conrad Hoffman Template to minimize the tracking distortion on a 7", then set up a cartridge for just 45 play. The same can be done for 10" records also.

7"dia / 2 = 3.5"rad
3.5" x 25.4 (mm per inch) = 89.8 mm outer radius.

Though its not a sexy choice I use a Shure M35 for both 45 and 78 play, with styli for each. I played with the distortion tracking distortion calculator on this site to get a good compromise between 7" and 10" then key the values into the Hoffman calculator.

Just about all the 45s are "2nd copies" of something on a 33 1/3 LP. The LPs get played on the Denon 75/Shure 800e. The 45s go into the wife's Seeburg Y160 juke box that has a gray dual needle "Seeburg" cartridge (Pickering?).

Although - most 45s that come into the house are used, they get cleaned and played on the Denon once or so, then shuttled to the Juke.

By the way, in the SF South Bay area, in San Jose is "Big Al's Record Barn"- a treasure trove of used vinyl - 33 and 45 at $5 and $2 each respectively. TONS of stuff. Often multiple copies to choose from/pick the best copy.

Personally I simply swap out the stylus unit on my Ortofon 40 for an om-10 standard elliptical...The Fritz Geiger on the 40 is the WRONG choice for 1950s 45's.!! Even the tip on the -10 is probably too small.

Anyway, in the garage system I have a very old Garrard changer type table with a mono pickering MC...was a neighbor's who passed away... The table needs help but the pickup is good and would be ideal for my 45's. One day.
