Ion TTUSB project

Postby GlassWolf » 12 Jun 2012 20:34

I have an Ion TTUSB plastic plinth TT and for fun, I was thinking about taking it apart, and making a new plinth for it from some Teac I have in the garage, maybe lathing a new platter for it from acrylic or MDF, and swapping the crap cart it has for a Sumiko Pearl I'll have as a spare cart here on a new headshel (the S-arm on mine uses a universal headshel with the 4 H pin connector)

I know it's a crap TT to begin with, but it seemed like an amusing project to see just what I could get out of it with a little woodworking, just toi see what the TT is capable of producing instead of just trying to sell it off for $20 or $30.

I'm taking the pearl off of my RM 1.3, so why not put it to better use?

The only concern I have is getting the TT apart and seeing if I can shim the tonearm to work on a new plinth at the proper height, since this oen is fixed in place on the plastic base.

Thoughts? (hides behind something sturdy)

I would guess that moving the electronics to a better table would be a more effective use of time.

Hi, I had one and used it for parts - mostly nuts and bolts. However... the dust cover is a close fit for a Sota Moonbeam. Sota wants well over $100 for one so getting one for zilch that came with the ION was a bargain. :)

The idea here is that it won't really cost me anything to do this.. I have MDF and teac wood to make a new "table" (plinth) and the tonearm and motor I can move from the Ion to that new table. The platter could be made from MDF as well to add some density and mass to it. If you'd read my post, you'd have seen that moving the electronics to a new table is essentially what I'm doing.
