glue repair: dust cover holder

Postby b1j » 22 Jun 2012 04:40

My Technics SL-D2 suffered an injury in storage. One of the little black spring-loaded plastic sheaths that hold the dust cover tabs broke. I have the off piece and it still fits. Because this is a high-stress part, I want the reglue job to have extremely high structural integrity. I'm leaning toward something like Loctite epoxy plastic bonder. Any experience with this?

Thanks!

I had the same kind of problem with a Beogram dust cove, I glued it back using something colled Q-Bond; it comes with 2 bottles of some kind of plastic dust which you put in between the 2 pieces and once the glue is added it kind of fuces all plastics together, worked for me. good luck

I checked it out on Amazon. Looks pretty good. Thanks for the tip.

Re: glue repair: dust cover hinge

Postby b1j » 02 Jul 2012 21:39

Back to this. I used epoxy but the part (called a hinge) immediately snapped off again, after I'd let it cure for the recommended 24 hours. However, it appears, on close inspection, that the hinge can be removed from the bottom. If that's so, then it could probably be replaced if I could find someone with the part who knows how to do it. Anyone here know where I'd look?

The only glue I ever found to work on such material is Altufix. Overly expensive, 2-component glue that is originally designed for PMMA, hence its name. It works by "welding" the two parts together, unlike conventional or epoxide or cyanoacrylate glues. I fear either a new hinge or a bottle of Altufix come close to the price of a complete SL-D2. In fact I've never seen a spare SL-D2 hinge for sale, but who knows, you might be lucky. I'd try ebay and the other usual suspects.

dust cover hinge

Thanks. A quick look on eBay shows lots of reverse-engineered dust covers and a shop that seems to specialize in them. THey talk about the hinges on their own site. It's too late to call, but I'll try them tomorrow or Monday to see if they have a spare hinge from a blown-out turntable.
