Akai Pro1000

Postby Akaipro1000 » 28 May 2012 21:10

Hi,
I've just bought an Akai Pro1000 reel to reel deck (second hand) but whenever I record any thing on one side, it erases the song on the other side, & when I play the same stretch on the other side (where I've recorded on the first side)It plays the song (recorded on the first side) backwards. I hope I'm making sense out here lol can anyone please help :)

Maybe the service manual will give you an idea

Sounds like the heads are missaligned. May be the service manual as Abril has directed you might have a solution.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies, I went through the service manual yesterday itself, I think this possibly could be the reason, the playing head is of 4 track whereas the recording head is of 2 tracks. I also read in one the forums on the net that this particular model records only on one side, but if you play another spool recorded on another recorder (not this model)on this it plays both sides, which I checked was correct. I guess I'll have to live with it cause it's otherwise a beautiful machine. Thanks once again.

I think you have a 'half track' machine - it records stereo over the full width of tape in a one-directional pass. This is the preferred format for studios & broadcast tapes, & gives notably better performance than the more common domestic quarter-track formats, which allow the use of 'both sides' of the tape.
Be very happy you have this format, it is much sought after for audiophile use now.

Thanks for your feedback "steerpike" that's exactly what I wanted to say but I was'nt too sure if a lot of people would undertand the 'half track' thing so for their convenience I wrote a detailed version. Thanks once again :)
