bose cinemate problem

Postby ATK » 10 Aug 2012 19:51

Hello,

I've just bought a Bose Cinemate speakers with a built in pre-amp and installed them on my Rega RP1, and it wasn't really that hard to install.
But I had a small problem with the sound, it was just too low !!
Even if I just turned up the volume to it's maximum level, it would get a little better yet still low...

Is it something I need to add ? Or is this just as loud as it gets ?

I'd appriciate any advice you have to give me.

You need a phono preamp to connect between your turntable and the analog audio inputs of the Cinemate system.

Pro-Ject Xpression III & AT440MLa
AKAI AT-2600 & Harman Kardon TD4400

So I should connect a pre-amp even though there's a pre-amp built in ??
And if so, can you advise me on what kind of phono pre-amp is best ??

A phono pre-amp corrects the tonal balance of the signal, and raises it to line-level, which the regular preamp in your equipment can handle.
You don't want to know what phono preamp is best. You want something decent that you can pay for.

Thanks for explaining, and really the price is not an issue as long as I can find a good pre-amp that can deliver good sound.

If price is not an issue how much are you willing to spend? The price of a phono preamp can range from what a meal at MacDonald's for you and your significant other costs all the way to "I can buy a new car for that much".

My suggestion is to listen to Alec's suggestion.

I have to ask. If price is not an issue, what are you doing buying Bose?

Ron.

It would take too long to list the better brands, much easier to list worse brands.

Bose stands for Buy Other Stereo Equipment doesn't it?

Ever noticed how you can't get specs for Bose products? Ever noticed how Bose sell their products in a dedicated shop or a special section in a larger store and you aren't able to listen to any other brand in the same setting and compare?

The thing is that Bose equipment uses cheap parts and although some of their stuff is meant to be reasonable, you can get better for less. The worst thing about Bose is the way they get away with marketing very average gear as premium gear.

My System: Micro Seiki BL51 Turntable, Stax UA7 Tonearm, RCM Sensor Prelude Phono Stage, Ortofon MC15 Super II Cartridge, Rotel RCD865BX Cd Player, Melody I34R (Astro Black 40) amp and Osborn Epitome Speakers.

you're totally right !!! i actually bought them from a bose dedicated shop, and there was really no chance to compare it to other products !!
and i gotta say, their marketing strategies are indeed very deceiving :P

so do you think i should change my stereo ? and if so what should i pick ?

Well, what is your budget? I like spending other people's money. I know what I would get given a variety of price points. I'm done chasing for myself, but I can dream.
