Great classic styling,
Yes, somehow timeless - and thanks to apple, modern again... .
Here, for example, is a model from a today's production which looks very similar:

A classic German export hit... . :D

Those Karstadt speakers sure look nice. I have similar speaker sets (rounded corners, metal grilles, heavy plastic casing (?)) by ITT and Telefunken. Maybe made by the same company?
Maybe, because the company Hans G. Hennel (Summit) has produced quite a few OEM speakers. But, it could be also, that they were produced in the former German Democratic Republic by RFT. They also made a few OEM speakers only for export, especially for western German brands or store chains.

Some pictures of the Karstadt softline K 3500 internals:

The layout of the crossover cirquit board seems to be kind of universal...

A little bit rusty, but nothing to worry about.

Due to the age of the speakers, I did expect the usual, disintegrated foam surrounds. To my surprise, the inverted surround of the woofer is in great condition - due to the fact that it the surround seems to be a kind of rubber coated fabric. =D>

I very reluctantly passed on this set of speakers for $32 at Salvation army, as I was on my way out of town with a loaded truck, watching my budget, and just didn't know if I really wanted a set of 6"towers. I had second thoughts the whole time, so might as well call this one "the one that got away". I believe they were Infinity model RS30 and other than a broken grill, they still looked decent, which someone else must have thought too, before I made it back.

Well, you never know what you're gonna find at the thrift stores, Big B...and you've found things you weren't looking for, but I was! Then again, you might want to take note of this particular Salvation Army as a place to return to again in the future...Could be a honey hole of goodies! :-k

Local Goodwills have been a disappointment these days, seems like everyone's got a smart phone to "check out" the good stuff

Ran into a Sony PS-LX-510 for $15 with a P-Mount Ortofon TM w/ 20 stylus, just lights, record detector and speed, shining when powered up.

It's a linear so took my chances. She's up and running and sounds great, stretched rubber belts held out for 5 or so record sides, new ones are coming :)

Happy hunting / diving :)

Found an old Pioneer PL-15 (C) a couple of days ago, for €20. According to the seller it 'needed some work'. He was right... broken arm rest, disintegrated belt and rubber arm lifter platform, frozen platter spindle. And of course it needs a new stylus.

Those things are easily sorted, but one thing that is not so easy to fix is the faux wood vinyl cover on the plinth; it has peeled away at spots, exposing the wood underneath. I'll have to decide whether to glue it back on, or perhaps strip it completely and put on some real wood veneer. That would make it look nicer, but it's also a lot more work.

Once I make up my mind I will post some 'before and after' pics — that is if I don't forget to take the 'before' pics...

Wow Japi sounds alot like the PL-12D I picked up a couple weeks ago, also for 20euries. Although mechanically sound (motor, spindle and all the mechanics inside work great) , the guy had included an extra stylus and belt both of which were just way too wrong to fit so wonder where he actually ordered them. And the vinyl veneer's peeling away badly too. But I'll just remove it and put on some new vinyl wood look veneer. Good luck with yours! Cheers

I finally get to post in this thread and join the club! I just found this last night on Kijiji and picked it up a few minutes ago. It cost me $60. I have wanted a Glaser Steers since I first saw one aroung 1990. It has the GE VR2 cartridge and speed minder. The platter mat is hard but original and clean. It seems free but the seller says it wouldn't move. I got the 45 spindle too! The spindle seems to be over a pound of cast metal. I can hardly wait to get home and see if it can easily be made to work.

VM, not a problem. I couldn't even wait until I got home to post it. ;-) It seems to have had so little use that there wasn't even any dust on either stylus and the only dust I could see was around the edge of the platter. The underside looked like a new machine. The Heathkit wooden base had no marks and the motorboard paint was blemish free. The only condition issue I could find was one stylus was bent upwards, an easy fix for sure. I haven't plugged it in yet but think the seller was unaware of the platter stopping during cycle and thought it was broken. When I get it home tomorrow and try it I will post my findings. This would be an excellent start to an all mono audio system.
