Denon avc 3800 issue

Postby Fishtails » 14 May 2012 11:48

Hi people

I have just picked up one of these free and was wondering what the following issue could be.

Turning it on it seems to just hang with no clicking noise from the relay. With the standby light flashing.

My other denon Pma-1315r has the same standby flashing until you hear the usual click noise on.

On a very rare occasion it will start up normally and play ok. Then with make a bit of a noise and s**t off.

I have replaced all fuses and cleaned the circuit boards.

Do you think the relay switch needs replacing?

Thanks

Although relays CAN go bad in amplifiers, you have to be careful with issues like this. The relay is part of a number of protective circuits, so it not "clicking on" is probably because something is telling it not to.
If it is just the relay going bad you can usually tell by turning up the volume (carefully!), if increasing the volume makes the relay "click on" it's probably just the relay itself. If it doesn't (And I suspect it won't because the blinking lights you describe usually indicate it's locked in "protection") , it's most likely a more serious problem somewhere else in the amplfier.

If you know how to solder, I would say rebuild the power supply. If the relay sounds strange then it could be in the relay or circuit that runs it. If it sounds normal then it probably is a problem in the power supply. Check the DC volts on the speaker terminals and the bias. Find the manual, it's not on HFE, so you may have to buy it.

Regards,

Ron.

Did you try doing a hard reset. I don't know how on yours, but I sell Denon and had to reset a 3310 pretty often. I forgot exactly the combination, something like quick select 1 and 3 while pushing the power button....
Just run a "Denon 3800 reset" and you should find it. It may also be in the manual...
Too much to list, I sell the stuff, so most of it was free (the only way I can afford my addiction)!

It sounds like something is heating up and causing the protection circuits to engage. If it starts, makes sound, then gets worse and shuts off, it sounds like an issue that is affected by the heat of the unit,
