Newbie With A HK 3485

Postby edwards464 » 29 Feb 2012 03:40

I'm new to this forum and new to vinyl as well. Over the past few weeks I have pieced together a Harman Kardon HK 3485, a Technics SL-2000, and a pair of Advent Prodigy Tower speakers.

Everything is hooked up and to me it sounds petty good. Yesterday I discovered that the SL-2000 that I bought has an Ortofon X5-MC cartridge installed on it. I did some more reading and found out that MC means "moving coil." I did a little more reading and found out that the HK 3485's phono inputs are only for MM cartridges.

The 3485's manual says that if using a MC cartridge that I should have a phono pre-amp running from my SL-2000 to the 3485. To my ears the SL-2000 running straight into the 3485 sounds good. My question is, will I damage the HK 3485 in any way by running the SL-2000 into it with a MC cartridge installed?

Thank you in advance for any help you are able to offer!

The Ortofon X5-MC is a high output moving coil cartridge compatible with most MM phono stages.

Thank you, that explains why it seems to be working just fine.

Ortofon HOMCs have a good reputation, so your liking the sound isn't surprising.
