Wow a poll that continues...to this day! I just wanted to add that the poll could have included this option: AVR (with pre-amp OUT capability) + dedicated power amp (pre-amp IN). It may seem like splitting hairs but not so. Here is why-
The 1990s Yamaha AVR that I am using makes so much sense in my small listening area (available set up space, budget limits etc) because 1) it has a surprisingly good MM phono section 2) tone controls that are quiet and accurate (though I seldom if ever use them) 3) remote control volume and source selection which in turn controls the power amp 4) DTS and Dolby Digital decoding and power amp in the AVR (that is NOT turned off or defaulted when using the AVR as a pre-amp. This means i can use the power amp for the main L/R (I prefer phantom center) and the AVR for powering the side/rear surround speakers. Convince me I'm wrong?

Just to update: Currently using an Emotiva BasX a-100 driving PSB T20 towers - sometimes using a passive Schitt Sys as switcher/volume control. Still using the modified as headphone amp Bottlehead Quickie with AKG 600 ohm 240 Monitors. i have replaced the earpads and foams on the AKGs with NEOMUSICIA Sheepskin Leather Earpads. Use the high impedance AKG with the Emo too, output jumpers in.

I have used Naim for @15 years, currently Naim 122x Nap150, but the biggest gain here was by adding the Flatcap 2 to the system. Noise floor went down dynamics went up.

I have a Nytech CA252 vintage @1981 which I have had for years needs recapping. As an integrated it had a really warm cohesive sound.

Sansui AU-719 Integrated
I got one that I need to recap. Glad to see it listed here. Looks easy enough to work on.

For me, all qualities desired are only fulfilled via multi-channel preamp/power amp, which have allowed less costly upgrading via Universal Player rather than purchase of latest Digital Processor.

Running a 1980s NAD 3020E and loving it ! Except recently, it has developed a hum that seems to be growing.

As I am only using the amp's headphone output to drive my fully active B&O Beolab 8000s, I am tempted to move away from the integrated amp route and go for a headphone amp instead.
Any recommendations for a decent ....

1. Headphone preamp
2. Line Level output
3. Volume Control
4. Tone control

I have realised through research that I am probably looking for unicorn poo. If someone has a magic bullet, please shoot me and put me out of my misery
