NAD 533

Post by maratea49 » 02 Dec 2019 23:39

After many years in storage I am finally able to use my NAD 533 turntable.
I am looking for help in finding out what components will work best with this turntable.
I need speakers, receiver/Amp, possibly CD player and cassette tape player.
In all I own over a thousand vinyl, and hundreds of CDs and tapes.
Amy help/suggestions are appriciated.

The short answer is any quality components will work fine with other quality components

Hey Joe, sounds like you are going to have some fun.

I think the most important thing to say at this point, is "what is your budget"?

In the UK you can pick up 2nd hand Marantz 6003 range gear for very little and, whilst not to everyone's taste it did win a few fans and awards. I use the 6003 with some monitor audio speakers. The marantz are all about 7 years old now and I wont be changing them until such time as I am ready to commit to a significant amplifier upgrade.

If you are happy with old stuff, then the 1980s NAD amplifiers and so many more from that period of British amps are all good entry level integrated amps. However, if you have thousands to spend, you might want some advice from other folk.

Well, a NAD turntable loves NAD amplification, of course. :) I have found memories of my NAD 3020i and 306...
NAD also makes/made cassette decks and CD-players. My first hifi was...

NAD 3020i (amplifier)
NAD 5420 (CD player)
NAD 6340 (cassette deck)

:)

Picked up a Yamaha A-S301 amp. Hooked up NAD 533 turntable. Only getting sound out of one speaker. Checked the amp and speakers, they work fine with the CD player. Ideas? Thanks....JOE

Check the cartridge wire clips are tight and not corroded. Be careful not to break them. Check the arm cable is ok and also check the RCA connectors on the end of the cable. If you have a multimeter it will make the job a whole lot easier.

Good luck and do be careful and gentle. Not sure how, but I damaged a stylus in my first few weeks checking out all my alignments. I was glad I didn't have to go near the connectors. Those connectors are small.

I had TTs as a teenager and thought I was being careful. Now I am even more careful. Maratea, ;-)

When visiting my aunt and uncle as a 11 year old, my older cousin would always be out for the night and I got to hang out in his room with his NAD 3020b, Mission 707s and his music collection. Family downstairs enjoying the music down below, I got to give it a nice loud play. The 3020 is (as far as I can tell) a wonderful bit of kit and for me, a beautiful design, simple form, perfect function. I know you are in USA. Right now here in the UK there are some Marantz and NAD bargains on that famous auction site.

It is not hugely helpful to mention items for sale in the UK I know sorry, but I am trying to suggest you can find a bargain. There is so much good gear out there now at highly affordable prices. Some places to look for a great amp that is not so new...

...(again, probably a UK bias). I did read somewhere that certain UK hi fi is made in a magic wood by magic elves :-) Or something like that. Whatever the cause, UK created some great stuff, especially in the time period your record deck was made. I think you are going to enjoy this. :-)

UK amplifiers were different tuned than Japanese and German ones (maybe by magic elves, I don't know :) ). Some Japanese makers tuned their products for the UK market so they could be more competitive, like the Pioneer A400X that had an UK tuning or Marantz SE amplifiers (the Marantz 66 SE was tuned for the UK). What this basically meant was more emphasis on rhythm and timing, but this also meant a slightly less detailed soundstage than the Japanese tuning. I believe also Sony and Hitachi used to tune some of their products for the UK market, but I don't know the model numbers.

I have two Alchemist - designed, engineered and built in the UK - amplifiers myself. :)

I run my modded (SRM deluxe acrylic platter) NAD533 through a NAD PP2 phono stage, a recapped NAD C320 integrated amp (it's an evolution of the 3020) and some Q-Audio Concept20 speakers on the Q-Audio Concept stands.

For a budget system it sounds great to my ears
