Design Acoustics PS-CV/55 -One speaker weak, scratchy

Post by PioneerFan » 22 Nov 2019 18:07

I picked up a pair of these at the local Goodwill for next to nothing. One of them is seemingly weak and scratchy. I have a working "parts" speaker coming. I did notice what sounds like rubbing on the voice coil when I press down on the woofer cone. Before I go crazy trying to isolate the problem to the woofer, crossover, or tweeter, is it possible that a bad voice coil could be the culprit?

Absolutely. If you hear what you describe, it is probable that the coils have been fried.
Replacing the woofer is indicated.
Is the tweeter working?

Cheers,
Alec

The tweeter sounds weak. I am having a tested parts unit delivered, and will gut the cabinets and swap the components. The cabinet of the defective one is much nicer.
