I own this Sherwood S-8800a, one of their early semiconductor receivers, from the late 60s/early 70s:

47104

It is built like the proverbial battleship and still works perfectly well at the tender age of 50 years. Everything operates smoothly and there are no scratching pots or erratic switches.

No, it hasn't needed any service to be in this state. It just plays on and on. And it's well capable of driving my big Castle Howard S2 floor-standing speakers to volumes that would have the neighbours banging at my door.

Further photos and a more detailed description can be found -> here.

That "battleship" is a beauty, Ralf...I love the silver-trimmed cabinet, too! 8) I need one of those for my 7800, but they're definitely worth the trouble, no??? :-k

Thanks- FleaPay is out, and I really don't want a "science project" receiver. I have a couple of leads that have backed out (they think they have a Fort Knox Holy Grail), and a couple of new leads from Facebook Marketplace. A

The silver trim is part of the front plate. I'd love to have the wood case for mine.

I'd love to find one of these that someone is looking to sell, as opposed to "show and tell".

Hopefully, one of those leads pans out...If not, you could check one of the Audio Marts...

...or if EBay is not an option, keep your eyes peeled on your local Craigslist, for you never know when one might pop up! Patience is key in this game, as I have found out! :) So is pouncing when the time and price is right! Actually, finding both of my Sherwoods was a fluke in each case...The 7310 was a "Sally Ann" thrift shop special that I saw in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday...It was a Salvation Army off the beaten path, too...I almost never see good stereo equipment in the thrift shops, so imagine my surprise when I saw that one! The 7800 came from a Craiglist ad where the seller was selling her dad's old stuff, after he had passed away...I didn't want to break up her dad's set, so I also bought his Teac Model 22 cassette deck and Teac A-1500 reel to reel...All of these were part of the same console unit that the seller's dad built and I thought it sacrilege to break them up...I even bought some of her dad's old records and a bunch of old reels he recorded to sweeten the deal...The thing is...The Sherwood was advertised as a TUNER and not a receiver, so it might have been glossed over by others...Fortunately, I was persistent...I almost didn't buy all three, but I quickly changed my mind after buying the receiver and tape deck to get the reel to reel, too...I convinced the seller to let me keep her dad's stuff together and I can't think of a better place for it to get used...Her dad loved using his equipment and I wanted to keep that tradition alive! :D

I almost nabbed a 7200 Sherwood locally, too, but someone beat me to it! #-o

All I can say is...Keep a lookout at vintage audio shops, bookstores, record stores, retro boutiques, collectible shops, flea markets, thrift shops, estate sales, antique shops and other such places...You never know what you might find if you're persistent! :D

I ended up finding a 7010 on eBay, where the seller actually didn't think it was worth a Luxman, and then I haggled, as he was open to offers, and finally got it for the price point I had in mind.

I will. I am pretty excited for a little piece of retro tech.

I'm looking forward to seeing your new Sherwood! 8)

Here is another kind of wood ,my Kenwood KR-33 which is early solid state and dates from around 1967.
I included a couple of interior shots to show how they built these early receivers.

I saw a gorgeous vintage Kenwood on Craigslist recently. These sets have a lot of soul. The Sherwood is being shipped later this week! A

Am I loving my S-7010. It is slightly warm, mostly neutral sounding. Right now I have it on a pair of Nordmende Sterling's, but am planning to set up a pair of Design Acoustics PS-CV (same as PS-55's).

It is a spectacular FM, and AM, tuner. With great sensitivity and selectivity. Well worth the wait.

Looks like they'll both make great winter projects for you, too!
