Michell Gyro SE & Audiomods Tonearm?

Postby watermad » 07 Aug 2012 09:48

Has anyone got any experience of using the Audiomods modified RB251 tonearm on a Michell Gyro SE?

I have seen some comments that the Audiomods with micrometer arm is a little heavy for the Gyro and can cause balance issues, any truth to this?

My modified Origin Live RB300 has finally expired.

The Audiomods seems to be well received and a reasonable price for the engineering when compared against the competition, e.g. Origin Live and Funk Firm, Inspire HiFi X100.

Yep I have one on my gyrodec. Series IV with micrometer.
Yes you do have to adjust the suspension a bit. In fact I added a little weight underneath the subplatter to get the springs to sit level. But I don't think there is much detriment to the sound.
Or, you can see if michell or if you're lucky perhaps jeff can make you a new armboard to balance off the weight.

Unless you change cartridges a lot you might not actually need the micrometer because the standard arm still has built-in vta adjustment, just not calibrated, and that's almost exactly the same weight as an RB300/700, so goes straight on.

Matt finish arm with gold counterweighs looks nice on the Gyro, too.

I have this setup and I'm having a few problems getting the VTA and arm to lock in place, it flaps about everywhere.

I bought the arm used but I'm sure I've done something to make it happen.

(noob).

If anyone can advise it'd be great.

Did you finally buy a Audiomods arm? I've had a standard arm since early 2011 on my Gyro SE works well.

Has it got a nylon locking screw?
Has the thread stripped?
Or is the screw a mite too short?

I sent it for a service and the v5 base upgrade with metal thumbscrew and it now sits perfectly :)

I think if I'd come across these before getting my GyroSE with Technoarm, I might have been tempted to go with it instead of the Techno.

The whole bearing assembly structure looks more solid than the standard Rega one.

Has anyone ever compared the two? Any comments on which has the bigger impact on sound, bearing assembly or arm tube? :?:
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair (Douglas Adams).

I think the audiomods is mentioned as being a better arm but they are both mods of the rega I suppose. Although the techno arm is more a mod and the audiomods a total rebuild.
