Help with Sut and Cartridge combination for MA-505

Postby fast_mick » 06 Aug 2012 05:12

I have recently purchased a Micro Seiki DDL-120 with MA-505 tonearm.

I already have a SL1210 with Jelco 750D Tonearm and Ortofon 2M black.
I want to set the Micro up with a moving coil cartridge.
I like rock and pop music so bass is important, but i like the detail too like when you hear singers inhale.

My Pre-amp is a Useugi Control 1 (tubes) into a solid state power amp ( Perreaux 2150B).

The more i read about SUTS and Cartidges the more i get confused and as the investment is quite high i want to optimise my spend. My budget is US$1,500 for the SUT (2nd hand is Ok for the SUT) but i will get a new cartridge.

Thanks for any help

For a cartridge i am thinking of a

Ortofon Kontrapunkt B
ZYX R-100

I think i can get them in my price range.
Does anybody have any feedback on them?

This is the turntable i have bought it is direct drive and probably cost the same as a BL91 for example. I know the high belt drives are famous but this turntable still should be pretty good.

I also have a Luxman PD-131 with a Grace 707 tonearm but it is in storage. I have been happy with DD so I will stay with it.

I guess the only down side with this Micro DD unit is possibly spare parts, but it looks in good shape and if it was going to break it would have broken by now.

I will give an update when I get it going and may just use the Ortofon 2M black for a while.

That is a very nice looking table, congrats! Looks like a top of the range unit of the DD series, and if it is build in any way similar like my dd40 i don't think you will need spare parts any time soon. I opened mine once and everything in it is all super high quality mechanics with some easy to fix electronics.
The only future problem i could imagine you might run into is the motor/bearing.. but then there were some aerospace engineers at work at micro so i would not worry too much about that either;-)

I just got a dl103r for my ma 505 and it sounds super! I have looked into sut's too, and there were apparently made some specific for this denon, so you could look into that one too.

I have my turntable up and running now.

I moved over my 2M Black cartridge and it sounds fab, much better than my Technics SL1200. The tonearm is fantastic with warped records which unfortunately I have a few of.

A lot more fine detail is present with air ... its superb.
