Pioneer PL-777AZ

Postby DYPrivateI » 03 Aug 2012 20:42

Hi,
I just inherited a Pioneer PL-777AZ turntable and am having quite a lot of difficulty finding any information about it.
I'm wondering whether anyone from this nice community can answer a few questions for me:
First, is this model any good?
That is, if I do find it needs repairs, should I even bother. Obviously any turntable is better than none, but I might otherwise invest in one that I know is good.
Second, it doesn't seem to have any power adapter. Can someone advise how I should power it?
Lastly, what does the "AZ" at the end of the model number mean?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,
I'm pretty sure that the AZ means it's a 'system turntable' ie it was part of a midi system and took it's power from the amplifier/receiver? I don't have any experience with the deck, but system decks are often built to a lower standard than separate components with more use of plastic in their construction. That doesn't necessarily write it off sound wise, but it might be more difficult to repair if it does develop a fault, especially as system decks normally have a shorter model life so spares can be an issue.

Thanks JaS,

I figured the AZ suffix meant something like that...
And I appreciate the opinion on the turntable. I'm thinking it might be best to just shop for another one that already has a new(ish) needle.

I think your thinking is sound.......

If the 777 is a system component as suggested, it's really not that great a build.

Better to save your $$$ for a dedicated, stand alone turntable. There are literally hundreds of offerings from Pioneer and other brands for <$100 that will sound better and love you more.
