You can start with the set overhang, then use the protractor. If the original was supposed to be close to a Stevenson alignment, then using a Baerwald protractor will result in the cartridge being about 2 mm farther from the pivot, and ay a slight angle to the headshell. So the final position of the cartridge is entirely dependent on the protractor being used.

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure which type of protractor I have, but now that I think about it - 2mm farther and a slight angle seems about right based on my experiments with comparing the sound of protractor alignment vs. the manufacturer's recommended overhang.
