Moving a collection

I'm about to acquire a 300 LP collection, but I've got to pick it up. What is it going to weigh, how much shelf space will it take up? Anything particular to cope with related to the transportation in my car?

You're looking at around 150 lbs of records, so hopefully they're in multiple boxes. If not, bring a friend. Shelf space will depend on the shelves in question, but I would figure about 6 feet of width. If your driving a long distance, make sure your records are in the air-conditioned part of the car to avoid warping, and take a spare key so you can leave it running and still lock it. But if its less than 2-3 hours, they should be fine in the trunk, after all shipping containers and truck trailers aren't air air conditioned and they made it to the record store at some point in their lives.

yeah, 60-70 albums of various cover types for every foot of shelf space

mind the heat of the sun in transport! Won't melt them immediately, but if you have to park for more than ten minutes do it in the shade.

If it's a long driving distance you might consider taking some white cloth with you to cover the albums as you drive. It's awfully hard to keep the sun off of all of them.
