Simple Minds meets TiteBond II...

Postby Chopsrr » 28 May 2012 02:15

I just got this awesome marbled clear LP of Simple Minds' New Gold Dream.

It looks new with no fingerprints or scratches, but boy is this LP noisy. Snap, crackle and pop all over, from beginning to end, and the inner sleeve has a powdery/gritty something in it.

Well after doing some reading and watching a few videos, I decided to give it a go on this LP. It's been two hours since I applied the glue. I think I might have put it on a little thin, but we'll see. I have the entire TT sitting under a tote to keep the cats off. I have it raised with hockey pucks to still get air circulation. It's moving right along as we keep it around 68-70*F in here.

Here's a few pics of the process...

Of course a zerostat and normal wash didn't work?

99.9% of new vinyl's been digitally remastered, which defeats the purpose of vinyl in the first place imo.

Wood glue has saved many LPs of mine that normal record cleaning solution just couldn't fix. Nothing gets rid of surface noise better.

So how did it turn out? I've had much success with PVA glue. It produces a lovely clean, gleaming surface.

I would say it removed 75% of the noise off of the LP. I'm going to give it another go-around, probably this weekend. Right now I'm working on a Joe Pass LP, then an Oliver Nelson - More Blues & The Abstract Truth LP.

I've been wood-gluing records all night. It's seriously a miracle worker on some records.

Sidenote: I've dabbled with Elmer's glue, and it just does not work as well.

Nice job on that, I made a note of the brand and have a couple of noisy records to try it on. One is a 1952 pressing of classical music on that thick non-breakable 33rpm stuff they promoted heavily after switching from 78s.

it has a lot of hiss sound while listening to it, it may just be the recording itself but I would be sure after doing this at least. =D>

Are there ways of thinning this glue to make a bottle last longer? The old Reg Williamson recipe with Elvenol could be thinned as much as 5 times to increase its volume.

You have to get a thick enough coating of the dried solid to be able to peel it.

Cheers,

I saw someone put a little strip of paper on the inner or outer edge of the glue as a "peel-tab".

Great idea! Heck I would even try a thin small plastic strip!

Although I knew about this wood glue thing I've always dismissed it as complete lunacy, but this topic somehow intrigued me. So I got a 250ml bottle of Pattex wood glue (supposedly a good TiteBond equivalent) and grabbed a record that sounds like there's guys riding bicycles on a gravel path alongside the musicians. Yesterday I applied a layer of glue and this morning before leaving for work I peeled off a nice slab of dried glue. Pattex remains very flexible after drying so no problems in removing the glue in one solid piece. There are some minor leftovers near the outer edge of the record which I'll have to deal with, but man, that record sure looks shiny and new. I'll have a listen tonight or tomorrow morning to see if the gravel path is still there...

Another concern with wood glues is the length of tome it is on the record before it is removed. Sometimes it may be too brittle from staying on too long, and a thinner layer only makes it worse.

When it is too thin to peel, then I use a length of packing tape to peel off the small bits that won't come off. I do it with the Elvenol formula all the time. WARNING WHEN USING TAPE:Poor quality packing tape can leave its adhesive stuck to the record. If that happens you may be using microfiber and alcohol or kerosene to clean the record.
