Anti-skate for dust bug

Postby bpbutler » 16 Apr 2012 00:36

I just purchased a Rek-o-Kut dust bug, and it seems that it needs some sort of anti-skate mechanism. Some records are worse than others, but it seems they all cause the brush to skate inwards much too fast. Moving the counterweight all the way to the back of the arm improves the situation somewhat, but it still doesn't work as intended.

Anyone else seen this kind of thing?

I live in an area of low humidity so I'm hoping it will help to reduce static buildup more than anything.

Why does the dust bug need to be same speed as stylus? I had one for a few years, and it always completed its journey before the cart.

First of all, if I want it to dissipate static, it should be reasonably close to the stylus path, or it's not doing much good.

Second, I'm not talking about it being a little faster, I mean it immediately tracks to the middle of the record, spending less than a second to go from the edge of the record to 1/3 to 1/2 way across. It doesn't seem like it's supposed to work that way.

do you dampen it with distilled water first? I would think the water would induce drag.

And I would think increasing the relative weight would slow it down, rather than moving the arm weight back.

Both are guesses, I've never owned one before. I use a Milty Zerostat.

How fast it traverses the grooves depends on the mounting distance. Try it with a bit of underhang.

Alec, thanks for the idea. I'm kind of limited in mounting position at the moment since I'm re-working the plinth, and I can only place it on the very corner of the subchassis. When I finish the plinth, I'll have more options.

I do not wet it down. My understanding is carbon fiber brushes should be used dry.

I have the Zerostat, and it seems to work for discharging dog hair (a constant problem in my house), but it doesn't eliminate static buildup during play.
