messed up sound when recording! plz help!

Im getting weird sound when recording using my Bellari VP540 USB and laptop...when i record, the sound is messed up. For example, in a song where there is a lead guitarist and back up guitarist, the lead guitarist will be in front of the mix, and the back up guitarists notes will be barely audible and not sound like it really should. Also sounds more bassy. Definitley sounds like i got something wrong but i have no idea what it is. When im listening straight out of the headphone amp in the Bellari everything sounds great it's only when recording. Thanks guys.

Strange -on the Bellari website, there is a HA540 headphone amp, and a VP530 phono stage, but not a VP540...

Is this a new model?

My first suggestion would be to check whether the VP530 is in Flat or RIAA mode...

My first response to your description of the problem was to ask whether you have RIAA - it sounded like it might be the result of a flat gain rather than RIAA stage. - But most phono stages don't have that option which is why I asked what the phono stage is.

So 1 possibility - you listened to it on HP's with RIAA on, and through your recording with RIAA off (flat mode).

no ya this phono stage has the option of either flat or RIAA..i have it in RIAA mode...i dont think equalization is the problem because like i said when i listen straight out of the phono stage with my headphones(it has a headphone amp built in) everything sounds awesome...it is only when i connect it to my laptop via
USB and try to record into audacity, that it sounds wierd. also, i am sure its not the USB cord cuz i tried 3 different ones. thanks for helpin me out...this problem is very hard to describe

ok will post a sample real quick...this is my description in the meantime..all instruments are in the center of the mix, instead of being spread out like they are when i listen straight out of the phono stage..tracks are a little more bassy..some intruments are hardly even heard at all, especially if there place in the mix was panned far to the right or left.

here is a sample...when the acoustic guitar pauses, there is supposed to be a counter melody with electric guitar, but with my problem it is barely even audible.

I think Audacity is only recording 1 channel. Check your settings or cabling.

Thats what I thought at first but I checked and it is on 2 channels stereo...also I tried on another recording program with the same result...do u think it could be the analog to digital converter inside thr bellari vp530 that is messed up?

It does sound rather "strange". Almost like a "double mono mix". The D-to-A converter would be a suspect. A software "glitch" would be another.

Here is another test for you

Take the line output, run it into your sound card, and try recording that way...

See if the sound is "right" - this will test some of your software, test an alternate ADC, etc...

If that works ok, then it will cast suspisicion on the USB ADC inside the Bellari..... if it doesn't, then you need to look at your recording software...

Process of elimination....
