Ariston RD11 + Audio Technica 1007 arm (build date June 1974) $5
New AT95E $50
=$55

Not the least bit flashy, but I am very happy with the music it makes.

Brilliant. It's the deck remember not the 'SON of the DEK'

Any pics my friend?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours :D

Mmmm...pictures - I will try to see what can be done!

Thank you for the post purchase positive reinforcement.

Whilst I have always owned and played records, I never really gave a thought to the player I used. I knew of the Sondek, but did not have a clue about Ariston. I just saw the old beast at my daughter's school fete and I took pity upon it! It was only after doing research on sites like this that I realised that it was a quite well regarded deck in its day.

Also good to hear some praise of the AT1007. I actually couldn't find any info on it and thought about changing it over for one of the more highly fancied arms - but I don't think I will bother now. To my ears, the whole things sounds super. I love it.

At the risk of seeming a bit lightweight in these parts, I will mentione that even more than the sound, I really get a kick out of the the way it looks and integrity of its design. Its a like a piece of furniture! And it makes music! And it is nearly as old as I am! How cool is that?

Ahh I'm back in the world of Vinyl addicts after a 10 year absence. Just picked up a Rega Planar 3 on Ebay for £125 - about 15 years old, unmarked and in good working order, including a Linn K9 cartridge, also in good condition. Just replaced the belt (original had a kink in it) for £14-49 (ouch!) At least that made an audible difference.

So so far I have paid, £139-49, but add in the cost of a phono amp and cables and it starts to work out at

Turntable Rega Planar 3 £125
New belt £14.49
Phono Stage Cambridge
Azur 640p £60
Cables to connect
to my computer £65

Total So far £265-49

Now add in the extra upgrades such as
Rega Motor upgrade £85 + fitting.
Arm Cable upgrade £115+
New Cartridge £100 to £200

and we're looking at £465 - £565 total. Yikes! A long way from a simple £125 purchase on Ebay...

Acryllic Platter - £90

Michell technoweight - £65

Project Tube Box Mk2 - £225

Dynavector 10x5 - £200 (imported from USA)

Total - £1278

Crikey, could have bought a Gyro SE for that!........SHOULD have bought a Gyro SE for that!!!

If it's an original 'RD11' good on ya..Tons better built than the Linn.

Heres' a bolt in replacement bearing housing to replace the quite dreadfll pressed versions Linn & Ariston used..Now my Platter will be perfectly inline with the sub-chassis..Can work on that Carbon fibre Sub now..

No, nothing like a Linn 8)

$55 is a bargain, I paid $350 for my Micro Seiki 20 years ago, although there's one going for $550 at the moment at the HiFi Exchange.

My System: Micro Seiki BL51 Turntable, Stax UA7 Tonearm, RCM Sensor Prelude Phono Stage, Ortofon MC15 Super II Cartridge, Rotel RCD865BX Cd Player, Melody I34R (Astro Black 40) amp and Osborn Epitome Speakers.

..and don't forget that $50 out of that $55 was the new cartridge!

I lost a day of my life to working the BBQ stand at the school fete, but scoring the TT at the second hand stall more thaqn made up for it.

what do you think

Postby loheswaran » 23 Jul 2007 22:34

I have the following tables:

Amazon Model One £2500
Moerch DP6 arm £950
shelter 501(2) £550, or
transfiguration temper V £2200
Nordost tonearm cable £700
whest phono stage

currently brewing in my workshop is an EMT 950 - been mechanically overhauled, now needs:
cosmetics
tonearm (probably EMT 929 - tempted with a breur)
EMT TSD 15 cartridge
STX15 step up transformer

I am itching to get the EMT 950 up and running - gorgeous

I got my first turntable a week ago for playing record from my grnadmother who past away recently. What did it cost? Nothing, I got a Akai ap306 from my brother (very nice man!) in law with a Nagaoka JT322 for free.

I uploaded pictures of my TT on the gallery.

There is not much information on an Akai ap306 on the web. Have you got any?

The vinyl replay cost is rising (as ever) but I'm currently with

Deck - 1986 Linn LP12 bought in 1996 when no-one wanted vinyl for £200 (bargain!)
+ Hercules power supply (just installed after Valhalla finally blew) £200
Tonearm - Origin Live modded Rega RB300 £400
+ replacement armboard £25
Cart - Sumiko Blue Point No 2 £140
Phono stage - Graham Slee Era Gold V £480

Total cost then of £1445 to get the sound from record to amps (though I do think I need to upgrade the cart).
Not bad I reckon for something that sounds a helluva lot better than my Roksan CD player (okay it is more than double the price...)
