Where in the World

the good, the bad and the ugly

I live in Texas flat land, DFW, where the highest mountain in my city is the mix-master on the freeway. In this beautiful land of about 3 million people, there is only one Linn dealer and may be three high end audio stores. There is no display of any tube amplifiers in any stores. SET is unheard of. However the land is huge and open, I don't have to worry about neighbors complaint when turn my system real loud. People here are friendly and easy to be impressed with my humble audio system.

ya oughtta visit portland sometime, the place is like the Wonka factory for beer lovers! micro-brews of all varieties are readily available in the bars, Henry Weinhards Private Reserve is still the plain, "vanilla" beer of choice for those locals plagued with crippling indecision, even though it is no longer actually brewed here (a small part of me died when that brewery shut down), and the various McMenemins pubs are some of the coolest bars you've ever seen! and the only people I've ever heard of ordering a coors, bud or any other of those watery McBeers are fratties and out of towners that don't know no better. let me just describe for you the Kennedy School: it's an old elementery school that lay empty for many years. the McMenemins broters bought it, and tunred it into a bar. it has two resturants, live music, a second run theater with couches and armchairs rather than the uncomfortable seats found in most theaters (admission is three bucks, and the NY style pizza they serve beats the hell outta popcorn any day!), two smoking areas (one of them being titled apropriately "the Detention Room", and B&B rooms for rent upstairs. I've heard (but not actually seen) that it even houses a sauna! the McMenemins brothers, who own and run several other highly interesting drinking establishments in the area, even have their own breweries, wineries, and distilleries at various locations! I think it's fair to say that we can top any other beer town in the nation, and probably place well in international competition as well. even so, it is still a little challenging to find a bartender that knows how to pour a black & tan.

Milan, Italy ...well: no sun, no sea, smog and stress: some would argue it is really Italy, but I love it just the same. JaS, I've been in Sheffield for a couple of months about ten years ago drinking some terribly bituminous beer in a pub (the Fox and Parrot, if I remember well) and trying to learn English. Just to say Peak District is simply lovely! Bye, Luciano

I live in Italy, in Milan during the working days and in Viareggio (west coast) almost every weekend. That's the reason why i have 2 HI-FI systems, but still doesn't explain why i have 3 turntables! Yes, i am addicted to vinyl ;D Have good music wherever you are! Max

It is not so bad to keep the old money. In Holland they sometimes only changes the f's for guilders to E for euro's and did not change the numbers. Audio has become far more expensive too, when those Euro's came. And we dutch had the best bill designs of the world! Most people will be thinking in guilders for many years still. In my point of view the budget audio market is collapsing more and more. People have different toys these days. The real classic audio knowledge seems to get lost too. But I would not like to miss this nice hobby. Dutch audio? What wants to come into my mind? Philips, Vandenhul (interesting site ), Pluto, OLS at Breda with their nice speaker range, Silltec cables, Hawk Audio from guru John Vandersluis, Hepta speakers. Not so much as from the real homeland of hifi: UK.

Hi everybody !
I live in small village 1,5 km from Helsingborg in southern Sweden. And my favourite interest is Music. Besides listening with my Thorens/Arcam/Mission stereo I also play blues and soul on my '98 Gibson Nighthawk...
Almost forgot... Single Highland Malt, Scotch Whisky, preferrably Aberlour, goes well with all kinds of music...
