Interesting. JAS lead off with his Dynavector arm so at present a "spilt mass" arm is at the front and end of the pictures on this thread.

Yes, sorry I am so familiar with my FONS CQ30 that I just expected that you all would know what it is ... Alec knows about Vestigial tonearms and the cartridge is a vintage AudioTechnica AT30E MC and I really have no idea what state the needle is in.
Is it worth trying to find out ?
It has played a lot or records over years, but mostly it was hidden in my workshop for oh say 2 decades or so ...
But now it's spinning like crazy and continues to hold speed very well, and my good records still sound great.
I also have many records that are more average (sonically) but they are often very musical, so I continue to play them also.
And now I am buying records again (who woulda thunk it) and considering a new table for my main audio space.
But there are so many fine choices that it will take a while to decide so I will be reading reading and reading.

The AT30E MC should be a very nice cartridge. I have an AT33E MC on my Oracle Alexandria III.
Yes, it would be worth the trouble of examining the stylus with a microscope.

I change my mind about turntables as often as I change my undercrackers....Well maybe even more often than that.

Currently using -

Technics SL1210 MK5 / Mission 774SM / Denon SL160 (very very lurverly lurverly sound)

Technics SL1210 MK2 / stock arm / Ortofon VMS20e MKII with a Super Elliptical tylus (also a very luverly luverly sound)

Systemdek Transcription / Mission 774 Original / Ortofon VMS20e MKII with regular elliptical stylus (again a Very luverly luverly sound)

Waiting in the wings as a long term project (an early birthday present for myself)

Technics SP10 MKII, it came with a DIY plinth and PSU. Should set it up with a NOS LAD / Jelco arm at the weekend then hopefully off for a service and new PSU next week.

Here is the Joe Z. regular use turntable list:

Primary system:
1. Garrard 301 with Grace G707 arm and Shure V-15 IV cartridge. 2 styli, 1 for Lp's and 1 for 78's. This TT has a second arm, a Thorens TP-13A, taken off below turntable, with a Shure M44 -7 with an additional 78 RPM stylus. I have had the GArrard since 1974

2. Thorens TD-150AB with Linn Basik LVX arm and Shure V-15VMR cartridge. Had since 1971

Computer system:

3. Lenco L75 with Realistic R25XT with 8X stylus. Since 1990.

Sorry, nothing exotic here, just old stuff and plain-vanilla moving magnet cartridges. And good luck from that old plain-vanilla vinyl spinner,

My GL75p is completely original with it's perspex cover, it works beautifuly and has had no problems since new in 1974, as this is now a 'classic' TT it is unlikely to get 'upgraded' in my lifetime, tho' I might have to replace it's 'v' blocks somewhen.

I see in this list, that I'm far from being alone in enjoying good hifi gear and thought I'd add these two definitions for measure:-

Audiophile, he who hears all of the sound, but none of the music.

Music enthusiast, Enjoys what he hears, cares not about the sound.

A hifi enthusiast can be either of these.

Hi fscl,

It depends, but I think It is the Audio Technica AT1100 with the Panasonic EPS-460C strain gauge cartridge and Micro Seiki MA505 S with the aluminum body Denon 103 R at the moment.

At the moment I'm getting a surprising amount of joy from an early Garrard 401 with an SME 3009 series II non-improved (metal knife edges, two rider weights) and an alloy bodied Denon DL-103R. It lives in a nice rigid ADC headshell, I strongly suspect it wouldn't sound any good in the "Swiss cheese" SME headshell.

The 401 is in a crap old plinth but I've decoupled the top board using sorbothane.

I wasn't expecting a lot from it but I can honestly say I finally know what all the fuss is about Denon 103s - it's by no means perfect but it's pointing the way.
